If you were driving in a 40mph zone and saw a car with a 2 year old and 5 year old unrestrained in the front seat, would you call the cops or just let Darwinism run its course? No seat belt or anything and climbing all over the front seat at 40 mph.
Link Posted: 9/20/2009 2:59:38 PM EST
I was climbing over the seat at 70 mph when I was a kid, I'm still here.
Link Posted: 9/20/2009 3:01:01 PM EST
Informing the authorities would be the proper thing to do. I don't really expect the two-year old to know any better and not so much from the five-year old, but I DO EXPECT the parent/guardian/whoever is driving the vehicle to be responsible enough to properly restrain the kids.
Link Posted: 9/20/2009 3:01:51 PM EST
Cop opinion: I would not call.
Link Posted: 9/20/2009 3:02:02 PM EST
I would mind my own fucking business. Who cares?
The fact that the cops can legally become involved in this issue is sickening to me.

I would call. It's for the children.

Yup, nanny state mentality. It's beyond amazing we survived as long as we have without the state dictating how we need to protect ourselves. I'm not against seat belts or strapping kid in, but.... a seat belt is no guarantee of anything.
Link Posted: 9/20/2009 3:07:03 PM EST
Fuck that...

BAN CHILDREN!!! Its for the children.

Wow. I hope someone calls the cops on you for something stupid as well. Next time you reach into your wallet and your shirt shows your CCW, I hope some busybody soccer mom calls the cops for a man with a gun.

If the driver was also driving recklessly, yes I would

If they were just cruising along, no.

Don't call 911. Call the state trooper hotline. I have it on speed dial

Edit: Channel 9 on the CB works well too...

if that is the way the parents choose to raise the children who gives a fuck? better yet who are you to decide their morals?
Link Posted: 9/20/2009 3:16:58 PM EST
unless its something crazy serious - I tend to mind my own business
Link Posted: 9/20/2009 3:18:08 PM EST
Nope.

Only if one of them was driving. Otherwise MYOB.

let the parents worry about the consequences if something happens. their kids their problem.

when i was a kid i always had a big Ka-Bar USMC knife strapped to my side.

hell i sliced open my hand once and begged my brother to not tell my mom so she wouldn't take it away. i think i wrapped it in a sock.

Tough call.......I normally hate busy bodies but this isn't a "Darwin" type of situation.

That scenario involves someone placing themselves in harms way and in those whatever happens
is good Karma.

This is a situation involving children who do not know or understand the risks they are being exposed
to and it's the job of the adult in the car to do their best to safeguard the health and welfare of the children.

It's really no different than failing to call CPS when you know for certain a child is not being fed or
sheltered properly. It's the responsibility of a childs parents to protect their children but when they
fail or actively risk that childs health it is society and it's members that need to step up and take over.
But only when it can be proven that the childs is at real risk.

This sums it up
Stay the fuck out of it

No. If they have your kids in their car, you can damn well tell them the kids have to be strapped in. If not, not.

Darwin + None of my business.
Link Posted: 9/20/2009 3:38:45 PM EST
Nope.. about the only thing I'll call in is obvious drunks being reckless.. crossing center line with oncoming traffic etc.

Some people here probably wont agree, but I'd hate to see someone get killed due to a drunk driver. Members of my family have been in a collision with a drunk driver, fortunately they were not injured

I'm sure they are on their way to the grocery store to buy a shopping cart full of frozen items with food stamps. The children will be running wild in the aisles.

I was coming home from Conn one day and saw an old station wagon pass me at about 90mph with a baby laying on the dash. I called and was told that it wasn't an emergency. Have a nice day!

So no I wouldn't bother.

Boy the Snitch Mentality is strong here. Sure lets turn in some guy you don't know for a TRAFIC violation. Some of you guys make me want to puke!!
Lord help us if they ever ban guns. Some of you shitheads will be turning in those violators too.
Bunch of buisy body old grandma's.

No flame at all, but I'm very comfortable in allowing children suffer if it means less infringement of people's rights overall. Anything can be justified "for the children". This is how we got the ogre of medicaid for < 18.

There's also the flip-side: The first time I called in a case of suspected child abuse it was all but blown off. If I'm going to stick my neck out for some stranger's kid, you had better fucking take it seriously. Never again.

While I want my kid to wear a helmet (he's still using a tricycle so he doesn't have one yet), I'm perfectly comfortable in not forcing other people to make their kids wear a helmet. But I don't want to pay for the kids brain surgery either if he falls on his head.

I agree about the snitch mentality, but if you think this is about a traffic violation, you've completely missed the point of his post.

Call the cops, maybe they'll want to check out your weapon stash while they're over at your place.
