Named for the famous Tennessee frontiersman, US Congressman and martyr of the Alamo, the Davey Crocket consists of a 279MM atomic projectile fired from a 120MM recoilless gun.  A fixed round charge of propellant and a separate piston could launch the approximately 1 Kiloton-Yield projectile to a range of 2000 meters or just over 1.25 miles.

The Cold War...WTF?!

It's not a kiloton warhead, more like 10 or 20 tons.

The M-388 round used a version of the W54 warhead, a very small sub-kiloton fission device. The Mk-54 weighed about 51 lb (23 kg), with a selectable yield equivalent to 10 or 20 tons of TNT (very close to the minimum practical size and yield for a fission warhead).

Even at a low yield setting, the M-388 would produce an almost instantly lethal radiation dosage (in excess of 10,000 rem) within 500 feet (150 m), and a probably fatal dose (around 600 rem) within a quarter mile (400 m).[3]

I take it you've some experience with these things?

I'm glad that the Army no longer has nuclear weapons.

Still enough to ruin someone's day though.

What is that, 1-2x the TNT equivalent of the MOAB?

I certainly wouldn't want to be infantry in a world where Tactical Nukes are in use.

I wonder what it would have done at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir.

Been calling around trying to get a live one.
The only stores stocking them are on the Southern border.
There was also something about coming into the shop with a sombrero & bandolier to see the back room stuff.

I wanted to be a ChemO until I found out that we don't use that shit on people...
Link Posted: 4/30/2011 10:59:49 AM EDT
I bet only the best soldiers got to "volunteer" to drive that thing around.
Link Posted: 4/30/2011 11:07:45 AM EDT
Hah, if I were the one firing it, I'd hope to christ the guy making up the propellant charges had his shit together that day

Thats how I found it...I have a cj-5 on 35"s and I want to give it a m-38 look.
And by m-38 look, I mean green on 35's with 1919's mounted on the dash and 6 pt roll cage, but whatever.

Yeah?  I shot a cannon once, too.  Probably never will again.

yes the MLRS system does not have  Nuke capability thaat is what the taught us....

I was a 13M

but come on you mean to tell me no one ever built one ....I have always wondered what the truth was

99%= no nukes for the M270
1% = I want to belive their is a nuke ATACMS out there
Link Posted: 4/30/2011 12:00:17 PM EDT
There is no secret nuke for the AFOM, nor are there units that are configured for firing such a weapon under even hypothetical circumstances.

Kind of.

I view nuclear weapons as a weapon of last resort on a strategic level.  Which doesn't leave a lot of room for tactical nuclear weapons.

Of course the Russians disagree.  Which is why they have 4,500 of them.

I would rather keep DPICM.  Which we are scheduled to lose in June of 2018, at the latest.

MLRS without DPICM is kind of pointless.  HIMARs will soldier on with GMLRS-U and the QRU...
