The Son Doong Cave in Vietnam is the biggest cave in the world. It's over 5.5 miles long, has a jungle and river, and could fit a 40-story skyscraper within its walls. But nobody knew any of that until four years ago. Would be awesome to explore this cave. |

How did something that big go that long without being stumbled upon by someone?

the viet cong knew about it, that's where they stored their secret spaceships.

It's actually a Nork tunnel. They took a wrong turn and came out in Vietnam.

I'm not into caving but I'd love to see that with my own eyes.

The fucking VC didn't fuck around with their tunnels did they.
Pretty damn mind blowing though, wish I could see it myself. |

Farmer lives on $50 per month. So he says he didn't get paid to be a guide to the caves for the British expedition?

View Quote Why would the NVA know every inch of remote jungle in their territory? Kudos for at least recognizing that this cave is in the former North Vietnam. The VC jokes had me wondering if others comprehended that. Kudos also to the guys who found this thing. That is some hardcore Journey to the Center of the Earth shit. |

INB4 VACaver! I know a couple of people who've been there. I'll get there one of these days That's got to be like an Everest type thing for someone with your interests. And, you're probably wondering what took us so long to hear about this thing. |

The cave had never been entered before because the entrance was small and it emitted a frightening noise keeping the locals out.

Hard to believe the NVA didn't use that for storage of items headed down the Ho Chi Minh trail
since it's location was so close to what was the DMZ during the war. |

I'm not sure by what criteria they are judging size, but 5.5 miles isn't even in the ball park for largest cave.
Mammoth Cave: To date, explorers have mapped and surveyed more than 390 miles of cave passage, making Mammoth Cave by far the longest known cave system in the world. The explorers are still discovering new passages, and they often say that "there is no end in sight." View Quote |

So they say its the largest for a single cavern I think. |
