I've flown my last flight in my EFIS/FMS/FADEC ERJ (and my last flight as Captain, for many, many years).
I start class for my new gig next week. Two weeks of indoc, and it's on to MD-80 school. I hope I can remember what an instrument scan is all about. And the limitations section of the AOM is about three times as thick as my old ride. At least you never hear about the MD airplanes becoming convertibles in mid-flight. But I still wish I'd gotten a "real" Boeing. |

I'll bet the -80's/DC-9's have the best lubed jack screws going these days..We only operate the 737NG's. What I'm going to miss the most, is all the automation. I've been telling all my new FO's to "work smart, not hard". The EFIS, and primary flight display totally destroy your scan. Guess I'll have to remember how to fly, and not "systems manage" again. No matter what airplane I end up on, I'm just happy to be here. |

It's a really long story, full of legal mumbo-jumbo, and a bunch of arbitrators rulings, but I'm told my new nickname is "throw up". I'm an Eagle guy, with flow-through rights from 11 years ago. |

Numerous coffee cup sized gauges FTW!! Except for the airspeed, that seems to be "dinner plate" sized in the -80. Apparently they thought it was important or something. It's just about as big as the AI. But I do miss my days doing interview sim evals in the B-707 and KC-135 sims. Nothing like 20 engine gauges, and a madly spinning trim wheel to put the fear of god in the new hire candidates.. And a climb fuel flow of 22000pph total in the -707. Good times! |

Congrats on the job! |

Congrats on the job! I heard yesterday that some of the '96 TWA hires got the call for June class. The rumor at the schoolhouse, is that they will be through the entire list by next year. They have hired a bunch of instructors, so something is going on. I'm not happy with how all this shook out, I'd guess not many are. |

That's good news...no one was going to be happy, at the end of the day. My brother was one of the left seat Eagle flow-backs for a time, and like he said, he was sitting exactly where he was as if he had never left Simmons. To paraphrase Josey Wales, everyone died a little in that damn mess. ETA: I flew with some USAir flowbacks while at Chautauqua...good guys, one and all. I didn't agree with the program, but at the end of the day, their union did come through for them. |

I flew a month with one of the ex-TWA flowbacks, who got displaced to FO at AE. One of the best months I've had in a long time. |

RUT ROH! Just put up on Drudge Report. Happened to me three times with freight and regionals. It's why I gave it up.
"The airline said Wednesday it will reduce expansion plans, especially on U.S. flying, although it still expects to increase fourth-quarter capacity 2.2 percent above the same period in 2010. American said it will retire at least 25 MD-80 aircraft this year to save fuel and add newer planes to its fleet." Hope it does not affect you. Best of luck. WJ |

WJ Not exactly the news we wanted to hear during the first week of class, but we are told it wont affect us right now, and that the recalls should continue, but at a slower pace. The new FTDT rules will have a rather large impact on pilot staffing, as will the pending retirements starting in December of '12. Hope they are right. |

Thanks, for the update. I'm a little behind you thanks to the Arbitrator.
I really don't disagree with the ruling. A deal is a deal, and youse had it before the buyout. Good luck with training, and in keeping your job. Will you have flow-back rights? Now, if only we can get a couple thousands of those old buzzards to retire. |

Only one week into the 12 day systems class, and my brain hurts..Way too many numbers on this airplane. We got to "fly" the sim off motion this week. This thing flies like a dump truck with flat tires...But I'm liking it so far!

you can always tell when a 80 is climbing out.
just sounds different. I used to work 6mi from an airport and always knew when it was an md80 Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

The training gods smiled down on me once again. After just about a month of training, I left the school house today, with my DC-9 type rating.
Two days off, and it's on to OE. And then my new life as "junior reserve bitch" begins |

I'm totally out of the loop, today is the first time I've spent more than 15 minutes surfing in the last month. You mean the SWA guys in HOU? That's some quality radio work, right there!! Considering the average age of our FA's, I don't think it's gonna be a problem over here.. |

Congrats on your new job. AA still has a good retirement.
I'm on the MD-80 and I have a small bit of advice. Always leave at least one eye watching it and never never never trust it to do what you told it to do or what it says it is doing. and you should be good to go. |

At times, I wonder how McDouglas ever got this thing certified? but I'm liking it, and having big fun so far! Some MD-80 Sim porn..(most of them were made by Link..As in "Link Trainer").. You have to put the control inputs in before you need them |

One helluva slow aircraft to fuel....that's for sure. Especially when it's doing some distance.
