I have a Compaq Computer with a P3 processor and I reformatted and the comp. does not automatically shut down when I am shutting down. I have to hit the button.

Is there something I need to configure to get this to happen.

Thanks...RC

First make sure you have Power Management still enabled in your BIOS.

Second run windows update to get all the fixes there is a shutdown bug in Windows 98.

Go into your power setting in the control panel the shutdown options are there.

Go to:

Control Panel > Power Management
Advanced tab

And then make sure shutdown is selected for power button behavior this sometimes works.

Edit the registry…Open your registry and find the key (I think):

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

”PowerdownAfterShutdown”

set it to "1" to power off the computer at shutdown, or "0" to reboot.

Sometimes adding new hardware can cause this problem… have you added any new hardware?

Best thing you can do is dump that Win98, it sucks, get XP.
