Most were. Just gives you more space to work on it. They are relativley light so you don't need a whole ton of power. They are also geared for pulling power not speed.

What year and model? Describe the body. Flathead or F head motor?

Any way you look at it its well worth it. If its a military your doing even better. Don't trust the titles or his descritpion to be right however, it seems you run into more jeeps that folks claim are military than seals at a gun show, and titles were routinley swapped around when folks got new Jeeps and kept the old registration (hell, a 42 looks juts like a 52 to 99% of the folks anymore).

I collect military jeeps. It is a sickness.

My 43 Ford GPW at an airshow a few years ago.

Have you actually seen it? the biggest problem with old Jeeps is rust. If the body and frame are pretty solid, even if beat up, it's probably a great deal. If it's got a terminal case of cancerous rust it may be more trouble than it's worth. That being said, if I had a couple year old computer system that I wasn't using or could stand replacing with a new one anyhow I'd probably be all over that deal. Your old system is practically worthless and the Willy's should likely bring at least some fun after the minimal effort a brake job requires.

The little 4 cylinders that came in the old Jeeps are pretty anemic but reliable and with the really low axle gearing they can do pretty well offroad. Just don't expect to cruise down the Interstate at 70mph.

Another problem with old Jeeps is that they are infectious and addictive. Seems once you take a liking to them you just can't seem to get them out of your system.

Good luck with your decision. Sounds like it wouldn't be a difficult one for most of us.

Uncle had an early 50's it was great off road. On road top cruising speed maybe 55.
