It's still a niche caliber, but it seems to be growing in popularity.

The biggest thing keeping me away is pricing and availability of ammo. All I ever see is expensive stuff, and it seems like subsonic loads are more rare than they should be.

Will the industry give us cheaper ammo, or will .300blk always be an expensive game?
Link Posted: 1/15/2015 9:17:49 AM EST
The price will come down but all ammo is up right now. Rolling your own seems to be the best option and what I do.
Link Posted: 1/15/2015 9:19:19 AM EST
I have a 300 black out. Has 6 rounds down the pipe. High ammo prices and lack of ammo makes it sit a lot. I have the dies to reload also just to busy. Maybe some year. Lol.

I have built a few guns after that one and sent about 5000 rounds of 556 down range with them.
Link Posted: 1/15/2015 9:24:17 AM EST
I doubt it will ever get cheaper than any of the Fudd calibers. $15-17 for a 20 round box.

Reloading is where it will always be for 300 Blk if you want to shoot it regularly.
Link Posted: 1/15/2015 9:24:53 AM EST
It'll never be as cheap as 5.56... 30 cal bullets cost more to make...but I've purchased the Remington umc white/green box for as little as $11.99 online and locally. I also reload my own.

300blk sucks
Link Posted: 1/15/2015 9:28:57 AM EST
I have never touched a factory round.

Isn't it starting to show up at Walmart?
Link Posted: 1/15/2015 9:39:04 AM EST
I doubt it will ever be cheaper than rounds like .270 or .308.

BLK is a reloaders caliber. You can reload it very cheap, especially if you cast.

This. Perfect for casting. Still cheap with factory components.

The academy I use has 300blk subs for ~21$ A box. Seems expensive but a bought a few boxes to hold me over until I can get setup to reload.

Nope.

Maybe when the next hot thing comes out and vendors shove it out the door at fire sale prices to get out from under it, but it's going to be a limited quantity and a limited timeframe.
Link Posted: 1/15/2015 9:58:17 AM EST
The local cabelas carries like 6 different loads, a couple being subsonic. It's definitely getting cheaper.

Do you disagree?

Is your time worthless?
Link Posted: 1/15/2015 10:21:13 AM EST
I buy the Fiochhi bricks of 50 rnds for $31, have seen them as low as $27. Saving the brass to reload eventually. Subs are still expensive, but I contribute that to the fact we still have a semi powder shortage going on. The .22 has for the most part caught up, and prices keep coming down.

I have 2 .300s and love them.

Ammo prices have gotten a lot better in the past year. Thought it would be a long time before we saw 30 cpr brass case 5.56 ammo, now it seems to be fairly regular. Not quite pre Sandy Hook but getting close.

Barring .mil picking it up which isn't likely to happen anytime soon, plan on reloading.

I wants it but not reloading yet.

Valid point. Opportunity cost.

Could be doing other things with free time that you may be enjoying more. Course, people are into different stuff, so if you'd rather be reloading...

The Gemtech subs are all easily available at $1/rd, I've found them for as little at $0.70/rd.

Buying factory and then reloading the cases is worth it to me over converting 5.56 brass. I've converted around 500 cases at this point, but it's so time consuming.

The new gemtech sub sonic loads are easy to find for 18$ a box. They are expecting to have that down to 15$ a box by late summer and 14$ a box by EOY. That's the good stuff.

Easier to send your brass to a fellow ARFcommer and have them convert it for you. Last time I did, it was about $65/k.

Plenty of us have reliable 7.62x39 AR's.

If it gets down to around $.50 per round, I might have to get a 300 blackout.

I doubt it. Brass case 7.62x39 for reloading costs roughly the same as .300 Blackout.

They're all over the EE. I've made close to 1000 cases myself but I won't be making any more. Not when I can buy them for .10 each.

Link Posted: 1/15/2015 10:52:40 AM EST
Prior to Sandy Hook, I was seeing it at gun shows for $13/box (supersonic) and I think $17/box (subsonic). I've seen a few people throwing their hat in the ring lately, so maybe prices will start to come down some again. I doubt you'll be able to buy a case for $300 like 5.56 but hopefully it'll come down some.

I'm still waiting for the last 208 grain I fired to hit the target.

Funny shit when you can pull the trigger, get up and look through your spotting scope and watch it hit the target at 100 yards. I may exaggerate a tad....

I grabbed 5 boxes of Gemtech subsonic at a recent gun show for $17.00 or $18.00 a box. One of the gun dealers had a few cases sitting on the counter while I was doing paperwork for a gun.

Bwahahahaha. (McNasty was kidding, in case anyone missed that).

OP: unlike 6.8 and 6.5 Grendel, there will be cases available for 300BLK as long as 5.56mm NATO is around. Magazines are interchangeable with 556. Nothing against 6.8 and 6.5 - its just that I don't think they have as long of a life expectancy as 300BLK.

That, and the legality of suppressors (aka "silencers" as they are officially called in the NFA) add up to: 300BLK is not going anywhere.

Hopefully when Wolf and Privi Partisan jump on the 300BLK bandwagon, they will make the brass (or steel) Boxer primed and reloadable.

If Wolf does make cases, expect Hornady to offer reasonably-priced ammo too.
