Your opinion?

Heard a rumor.

Not sure if it is true or not.

Have seen some nasty results from red waspers do the same. I don`t like waspers. Those things are unpredictable.

Probably.
When I was a kid we used them to keep ticks,Scorpions, and damn near every other bug out of the yard.
I think they will even eat stuff as small as fleas.

Yes, they will also eat all the vegetables.

I have 6-30 chickens at any point in time.

ETA: You only need a rooster if you're planning on hatching the eggs.

They eat them.  Peas, beans, tomatoes, limes, figs, oranges, grapes, and especially watermelon.

I haven't seen them eat leafy vegetables like collards but that doesn't mean they won't.

They also eat frogs, lizards, snakes, and a bunch of other things you wouldn't expect, like their dead comrades if you don't clear out the body fast enough.

I was always told to harvest the eggs every time they lay because the might not lay another if she still has one under her.
It's safest to do it that way anyway, snakes and the aforementioned critters will eat the eggs too.

I let mine roam all day, but at night they sleep in a fenced in chicken yard with an attached coop.

2×3" wire grid walls around 4 feet tall with chicken wire covering the first two feet off the ground.

The top is covered with chicken wire and plastic netting supported over a grid of electric fence wire.

Nothing can get them in there, everything I tried in the past resulted in birds lost to predators.

Possums and raccoons will kill them for sport of you give them an opportunity.

You will need a coupe of some kind it must be well protected.
A nice high fence made of chicken wire around it will help also.
In all likelihood your first flock might die off.

The ranch my Grampa managed had about 100 goats on the place. We'd find kids that had holes in their skulls, looked almost like a gun shot wound. Grampa said it was hawks. They'd knock a hole in their head then eat on them.

These were new born kids, maybe a day or two old.

What do you feed your chickens as food on a regular basis?

Where do you get it and do you feel like it is cost effective as a comparison to going to the grocery store and buying something already slaughtered?

Do you slaughter your own poultry?

I want to learn how to do that.
