Wife got a freelance gig doing editing work. For this job she needs a portable machine that can run MS Office and can let her access gmail. But it has to be reliable, can't suck, and have decent battery life.

That's all she needs.

Any suggestions?

Microcenter has a great selection of low-cost laptops. I grabbed an HP 2000 for my kids for $250. Windows 7 HP 64-bit, 320 GB HDD, 5 hour battery life, built-in wifi, very happy.

My only regret is that I only bought one, instead of three (one for each kid).

I'm sure there'll be some smokin Black Friday deals coming soon. They sell both online, and in their stores, and claim to match/beat newegg.

Throw out the "tablet" option if she's doing editing. Mouse / keyboard will be critical for doing that.
