..win an Oscar for Gran Torino?
Because he was portraying a racist white man. Hollywood couldn't admit how great he was in that movie.
Because Slumdog Millionaire
I was seriously blown away by the academy's ineptitude |
I think the movie may have portrayed persons of a certain ethnicity in a negative light, thus precluding sanction.

I don't know but there were several messages contained within and may have not been PC enough ?
I thought it was deep myself. |
Also, much hot 1911 and Garand action in that film. Hollywood lefties hate that shit.

Thread prompted me to go check.
Grand Torino didn't receive a single nomination. Your Best Actor Award went to Sean Penn for Milk, whatever the fuck that was. |

They were probably going to give it to him until they heard the terrible song at the end.

Because he was portraying a racist white man. Hollywood couldn't admit how great he was in that movie. But he wasn't racist, that was the point in the movie. It started with him being racist to minorities, including him using racial slurs against Hmongs and African Americans. During the course of the movie, he transformed to appreciate the Hmong culture for their family values but it never showed him being a completely changed man. The movie was amazing in many aspects. Its horrible that it didn't get more recognition than it did. As an interesting factoid about the movie, Eastwood demanded that the lines be totally unchanged by the studio after he read the screenplay. The only things modified in the script was the change from the setting being in MN to MI. |

Studio is partially at fault along with the mechanism of the oscars
Time had an article about it but the one above has more of a practical explanation
For Hollywood to give an Oscar for Grand Torino, it would be forced to validate most of the issues "fly over America" has with modern society.

Hs acting was ok and the movie was somewhat entertaining.
The story was meaningful, but nothing that hasn't been done before. I saw it once and haven't had the desire to see it again. Nothing about it was Oscar worthy imo. |
BTW, Eastwood has 4 Oscars so I'd say that alone shoots any conspiracy theory all to hell.

Just the type of tripe that Jollywood just loves |

Because his acting was completely unimpressive in that movie.
Because he isn't a good actor and that character in particular was predictable and boring.

View Quote Hollywood circle jerk masturbation fest that year, no doubt. Gran Torino was a masterpiece, but Christian alllegory will never compete against the martyrdom of the embodiment of San Francisco gay bathhouse culture. |
