My local government is going to set up a gun buy back program. Why should I be for or against this measure.

The lie inherent in the name is enough to be against it.  Unless the police sold it to you, they can not be buying it back, as it was not theirs.  Accepting the premise means ultimately that you accept the government owns everything and you have no property rights at all.

Beyond that, these things serve as a great way for criminals to get paid to dispose of evidence.

Finally, it's just a silly way for gun grabbers to get on TV and claim victory.

Against.

Because the people turning in their guns aren't the gangbangers.

Because the guns are usually crap, & non functioning anyway

Its a rip off, because any working gun is usually worth more than the $50 gift card they're gonna give you.

It does nothing to stem the rise of violence.

It sends the message that Person with gun = Bad .... Relinqish your gun = Good

Do I need to keep going or is that enough ??

That is how England go most of their weapons from honest people, with a simple buy back.

I've often wondered what would happen if someone stood outside the door to one of these and offered people about $20 more per gun than the cops are paying.

Assuming FTF transfers are legal in your state is there anything wrong with this?

shouldn't be anything worng with beating them to it, if it was illegal thats one more reason the cops should not be doing it.

Again they are just going to run ballistics on them and try to solve cold cases if possible. I would never support this unless there was a reallocation, if the guns were given to a gunclub or something rather than destroyed, they should be taken from the weak and feeble and given to the people who cna put them to use in their defense.

They've never been proven to stop street violence.....That was the intended purpose (or so they say) So why spend taxpayer money to buy people's junk ??

Why were those funds confiscated?

Is this something that the Founding Fathers would approve of?

Well there's answer #1, the money should not be there in the first place.
If they've already stolen the money it should be used on something possibly effective.
If they can't use it on something effective they should give it to someone who can use it on something possibly effective.
If they can't use it on anything possibly effective, and they can't give it to anyone that could possibly use it for something effective they should donate it to a charity.
If they can't do any of the above, or 1001 other things, they should burn it.  It's at least as effective, and is unlikely to destroy history, as these gun buy-backs often do.

In short, on the list of "dumb things to do" gun buy-backs are close to #1.

Some of the stuff them ladies turn in are usually TROPHY GUNS...makes my blood boil...not only is the history of the gun gone forever...but the old ladies usually get the short end of the stick...

Aren't buy backs in essence..transfer of firearms..from one owner to another?...are FFL's involved in these "buybacks" to facilitate the lawful transfer of firearms? ......I think we just found the "gunshow loophole"
