Anybody know the reason why the american flag is inverted on the military combat shirts ?
i.e. the stars on the right and stripes on the left ?

Field goes to the front.

because it gives the appearance of flying into battle, never retreating

Because that is the way the flag would look on a pole carried by a soldier who is charging forward. From his right side of course.

Its not inverted, that would be a signal of distress. The field (the blue part with the stars) alwasy faces front...think of it this way...if it were a actual flying flag, and what it is attached to was in motion, what would its position be...if it were worn on the left arm it would look normal...

AR 670-1, para 28-18:

"(2) The full-color U.S. flag cloth replica is worn so that the star field faces forward, or to the flag’s own right. When worn in this manner, the flag is facing to the observer’s right, and gives the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward. The appropriate replica for the right shoulder sleeve is identified as the reverse side flag."

You win the prize...Locally a man displayed his flag like this after 9/11 and so many people who did NOT understand what it meant called him to complain because they thought he was being disrespectful. There was a write up in the local rag about it.

And yes what everone is saying is true...looks like charging.
Yup If you notice, many fire and police also have the flag emblazoned on uniforms/vehicles in this fashion

Vocabulary lesson for the day:

Inverted = upside down.

Reversed = opposite side visible; mirrored.

I wouldn't use an inverted flag as a distress signal...people would just think you're a moron, like they do when your car's sun shade has the "Need Help. Call Police" facing outward...

Inverted can mean either inside out or upside down:

Main Entry: 1in·vert
Pronunciation: in-'v&rt
Function: transitive verb
Etymology: Latin invertere, from in- + vertere to turn -- more at WORTH
1 a : to reverse in position, order, or relationship b : to subject to inversion
2 a : to turn inside out or upside down b : to turn inward
3 : to find the mathematical reciprocal of <to divide using fractions, invert the divisor and multiply>

But I agree with you on never displaying the flag that way...and I loved the analogy you used.

but in the case of a flag, it can only mean upside down. As you can't turn a flag inside out

No smartass....what I am saying is that people may have thought the FLAG was upside down OR hung facing the wrong direction (which, for a 2 dimensional flag, would mean "backwards")

The word you want is 'reversed'. Inverted means upside down.

No, it doesn't. It is supposed to always be to the flag's right. This new uniform thing is an innovation, and it doesn't comply with US Code (but hey, who cares about that...).
