If you would have told me two years ago that I would get hooked, then subsequently watch all 7 seasons of Buffy The Vampire Slayer I would have told you yoru were nuts.  But here I am.  Last three discs of season 7 sitting on my TV in their Netflix wrappers waiting for me to watch this weekend.

Who else is hooked?

My only complaint has been that  it needs more guns and less clothing.

Because of Joss Whedon.  If you like Buffy (I only tolerate it, myself) try Firefly or the movie Serenity when it comes out in two weeks.  Firefly is right up a gun lover's alley, you'll have a new favorite show for sure.

edit for spelling

Hot chicks, kung-fu, witty dialog?  Great show.  Angel is good too.  I didn't get a chance to get into Firefly, but I will see the movie when it comes out.  Joss is great at weaving a story and he and his writers were excellent with the dialog.

Why is Buffy The Vampire Slayer such a dang good show?

I asked myself the same thing a few years ago, try to describe the show to someone who's never seen it and you sound like an idiot.

Buffy?  You like a show about a teenage girl who runs around killing vampires.....who all seem to know martial arts??

I finally figured out it was Joss Whedon, no one else could have made Buffy The Vampire Slayer successfully.

Because Buffy is so darned hot.  Or should I say such a delight to look at.

Sara Michelle Geller is just so fine.  So is Jennifer Love Hewett.  They remind me of each other.

Very lady-like but with that certain, I don't know how to put it,  good-girl beauty.  Small, trim and very sanitary sweet, and...agghhhh...come here Buffy, sit on my lap while I feel you up.

Oops, lost my train of thought there, the imagination runs wild.

And did I mention exquisite??  I should have.

It's all Joss Whedon. His writing was great, and the characters were excellent. The casting was great too.

My wife dragged me into watching Buffy kicking and screaming. After watching a few episodes I wondered why I didn't catch on sooner. Great show.

Dude are you kidding? Buffy went on the air in 1997 and has been off the air for like 4 years now. Where you been?
Also check out Angel the Buffy spinoff and also watch Buffy the vampire slayer the movie!! I like Sarah Gellar but KRISTY SWANSON WAS DA BOMB! She was always the best in my book. I guess she was too old to play Buffy once the show hit the air But i do have her Playboy issue.
Joss Whedon is the best Sci-fi writer out there now. He also did Alien ressurection. He actually approached the Star trek franchise to help rescue them from their crap ratings with a new show. But of course they were too stupid and arrogant to take him up on it so the project is dead. So now they lost Enterprise and probably will not make another movie for years.

My wife & I watched it from the very beginning right up to the (somewhat disappointing) end.

I have yet to watch anything Whedon has done that I didn't enjoy more than 99% of what else is out there.  He is right up there IMHO with QT as far as writing the best dialogue & character interaction - and his stuff is much more family-friendly than QT's...

Oye.

"Alien Resurrection" = worst movie ever.  Worst waste of a free movie ticket I ever spent.  That movie absoutely ruined the franchise.  Never wasted $$$ on it, but "AvP" was apparently just piss-icing no that sh!t cake.  Get "Alien" & "Aliens" & call it a series.  Before the "Resurrection", I viewed "Alien 3" as borderline, at best.  I now consider it a virtual masterpiece by relative comparison.

The dialog was pretty snappy, and the premise strong--monsters are metaphors for the various problems of high school. Part of Whedon's technique is to exploit the viewer's knowledge about TV cliches; the viewer gets set up to expect one thing, then Whedon does something else.

The characters develop a pretty good history over time, too. It's not status quo ante at the end of an episode. The events carry over and affect the character for the rest of the show's run.

I think that's a big part of why his shows/writings draw a much more rabidly loyal audience from among folks who watch/have watched a lot of TV/movies ("couch potatoes," sci-fi geeks, etc.) than from "casual viewers."  Simultaneously, his story arcs often require consistent (week to week) viewing to fully enjoy, again leaving out "casual viewers" (who might catch every other or every third episode of a show).

In other words, he expects his audience to be informed and to pay attention - unlike the writers of most of the laugh-track-saturated pablum that folks are usually fed over the airwaves these days...

ETA:  I'm not saying a casual viewer can't enjoy Whedon's shows at all... just not as much IMHO.

One of my favorite scenes was Buffy running to catch her boyfriend before he leaves in the helicopter. The cliche, of course, is that she gets there in the nick of time. But, alas, the helicopter departs and he never even sees Buffy running. I about died laughing because the joke was on the crappy writers who use that cliche over and over and over.

In one of the final episodes Buffy visits an ancient priestess, who has been waiting for millenia, guarding a magical weapon intended for the "Final" slayer.

GUARDIAN: I?d forgotten. I?d forgotten how young you would be. Comes from the waiting. The mind plays tricks. (re: scythe) I see you?ve found our weapon.

BUFFY: Who are you?

GUARDIAN: One of many. Well time was. Now I'm alone in the world.

BUFFY: So what are you? Some kind of ghost?

GUARDIAN: No, I'm as real as you are. Just? well, let me put it this way: I look good for my age. I?ve been waiting. You pulled it out of the rock. I was one of those who put it in there.

BUFFY: What is it?

GUARDIAN: A weapon. A scythe. Forged in secrecy for one like you who... Im sorry. Whats your name?

BUFFY: Buffy.

GUARDIAN: No, really?......(incredulous look)...... We forged it in secrecy and kept it hidden from the Shadow Men.

BUFFY: Oh, so you're like? what are you?

GUARDIAN: Guardians. Women who want to help and protect you. We forged this centuries ago, halfway around the world.

BUFFY: Hence the Luxor Casino theme.

GUARDIAN: Forged to kill the last pure demon that walked upon the earth. The rest were already driven under. And then there were men here, and then there were monks. And then there was a town....and now there is you. And the scythe remained hidden.

BUFFY: I don't understand. How is it possible that we didn't know any of this?

GUARDIAN: We hid, too. We had to until now. We're the last surprise.

BUFFY: Does this mean I can win?

GUARDIAN: That is really up to you. This is a powerful weapon.

BUFFY: Yeah.

GUARDIAN: But you already have weapons. Use it wisely and perhaps you can beat back the rising dark. One way or another, it can only mean an end is truly near.

(Suddenly a pair of hands shoot out from behind the curtain and seize the Guardians head, twisting it violently and snapping her neck. )

CALEB: I'm sorry, I didn't catch that last part on account of her neck snappin and all. Did she say the end is near? or here?

CALEB....is actor Nathan Fillion...who is also Capt. Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds of Firefly fame.

I just love the humor in this show.

Best scene ever:

Awkward moment where Buffy's mom Joyce is sitting in the living room with Spike (when he was evil but cut  a deal with Buffy).  It's obvious they have to find something to talk about to break the uncomfortable silence.  Finally, they come up with this classic exchange:

JOYCE (turns to look at Spike from across the room):  Umm, have we met before?

SPIKE:  Yes.  You were chasing me with an axe, screaming "Get away from my daughter."

JOYCE:  Oh.

They go back to glancing around the room awkwardly....

I like it a lot. One of my top 10 favs.

The answer, IMO, to your intro Q is: Joss Whedon (creator +++) is a bonafide GENIUS! But as twisted as this is, I think I liked Angel better (the SHOW, not the character) Go figure.

Spike was fun.

End of first season and he drives off in the Caddie(?) to the sounds of Do You Know the Way to San Jose?

When he came back and hadn't fully been accepted so is chained down when the Indians attacked and he kept getting hit by arrows .  Couldn't kill him just hurt and he gets a close call to the family jewels.

Buffy just after she rescued her commando boyfriend. "Well the unit has killed 30 something and I've killed 17 vampires"  "What, what do you mean you killed over 300?"

And the babes.  2/3 episodes were pretty good, never took itself too seriously

Andel was pretty good too.  The first episode when he shows up just after Cordy figured out a vampire had captured her.  She sees Angel  "Oooh, Now you're gonna get your ass kicked."

There was one episode involving some sort of student slaughter at the high school, it was pulled from the schedule when the Columbine shootings happened. They did air it about a year later, if I remember correctly. As I recall there was no real parallel with Columbine at all, just network ninny's over reacting.
