According to the patent office they hold the trademark, as I understand the military hold rights tot he technical data plan but not the term itself. In the past colt has produced comercial m16 rifles ( nfa) and uses the term on their export rifles ( nfa) so why don't they use it on their civilian offerings ?

They just became comfortable with standard FCG pins. Colt management seems a bit scared.

Same reason the semi lowers weight more. To be hsld you gotta put it on a mill and spec out the pocket for weight reduction.

For a while all m16 rifles were stamped with ar15 instead. And later stamped with both. I feel if they made lowers with the rollmark m4/m16a2e they would sell like hot cakes to those wanting to build clones. I've seen examples of the 723 , m16a2 , m4 carbine and early flat top 20" rifles marked as such.

They currently mark their carbines M4 or M4A1, so I don't know why they would shy away from marking their rifles M16.

Because it would make them full auto... according to many in gov't & the media.
