Laptops will usually shit out like that if they overheat.

Didja lose a fan?  Does the case feel surprisingly warm when it does this?  Do you have a pet or smoke?  Have you ever vacuumed out the vents?

Either that or you got a union laptop and fuck you breaktime.

I've had that happen to my laptop twice. the first time is was the hard drive (went out) the second time it was a rootkit.

thanks

Do this:

You'd be surprised at how much dust is in there at the processor thermal-cooling heatsink.

You say it's not overheating at all...

How do you know this??

Computers have multiple fans. Just because you hear one, doesn't mean they're all GTG.

The most important fan of all is the one on the processor.

I suspect this might be a player...

If it's truly not heat, there are several possibilities.... mobo, psu, etc.

Still, do what I said a few posts up.
I'm betting there's still a buttload of dust on the processor heatsink...it's definitely NOT going to hurt anything if you clean it.

That may not help completely, but maybe a little bit for now.  Check that heatsink!  You can't just vacuum it off the heatsink without removing it first..

its been on 15mins now.. im leaving it on all night to see if its in in the morning to ssee if it made it past the virus scan. if it does all should be well... if not ill take it apart again and remove the heat sink

Fair enough.  Sounds like you're good to go for now, and I hope it keeps running for ya.

Just goes to show that overheating isn't always noticed.

Not necessarily. If there's a problem with the cpu fan or heatsink connection the temperature of the core can shoot up a few hundred degrees Celsius and shut down very quickly from overheating. You may not feel the heat radiate out that quick but the CPU chip will be extremely hot to where it'll burn your skin off. Don't ask me how I know. There's a chip out there with a perfect fingerprint on it somewhere.

Possible things: check fans to make sure they're working. Take off keyboard and use compressed air to blow out all dust. A vacuum just won't get it. Make sure heatsink is connected firmly to CPU via compound and screws. Make sure no wires are blocking the fan from spinning.

Make sure it isn't a battery issue. Easy to tell if your battery keeps popping up as dead.

Possible HDD failure but usually there's noise in the HDD as it's going out. Another possible issue is chip creep. I borrowed a heat gun and have to flash my solder as my video card has creeped so it automatically shuts the screen off and I can't do shit with it. That takes a bit more elbow grease and experience to perform this fix.

I don't know which one it could be. I guess more likely battery or HDD. If something was wrong with the CPU fan/heatsink it should overheat within seconds and shut down. If it was general bad airflow or bad fan you should feel hot air poring out and feel the laptop heat up.

Indeed.  The case might be designed such that your leg is sufficiently insulated from the hot parts that they can easily overheat to shutdown without you necessarily being able to fry an egg on it.

They often have great feature lists and are very flashy, but I've seen a lot of grief from them.  They tend to go for gizmos and widgets untested in the wider market and they suffer in reliability because of it.

Apple often has the same problem, especially in their "halo models".

Pull it apart and remove the mouse nest sized ball of dust, hair, skin flakes, and belly button lint.

I have had three laptops develope this over the years.  Once the heat sink gets plugged, the fan cannot pull enough heat through it and it turns off.
