I'm hoping for answers more meaningful than, "Because I can."

I ask because in response to "How many mags do you have?" threads, I see answers like "I stopped counting after 100."

Well, when I look over at my stack of 10 loaded PMags, I don't think, "You know what I need? More mags."

Maybe someone could explain to me why I DO need more mags.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 8:53:42 PM EDT
Because YOU can
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 8:55:44 PM EDT
Because
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 8:56:47 PM EDT
"If some is good, more is better."
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 8:57:45 PM EDT
I only have two mags...
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 8:58:12 PM EDT
I like the fact that I can go to the range and shoot rather than loading mags.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 8:58:15 PM EDT
I'm not there yet, but magazines rank high on my "to-buy" list.  Ideally, I'd like to not have to load magazines while at the range.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 8:58:19 PM EDT
I have 8 mags. I would just buy them when I'd see them around –– incase of another AWB or something. I figure I won't shoot more than a couple-hundred rounds when I go out shooting, and in a SHTF situation, I'll be dead or safe by the time I go through 8 mags, and I wouldn't want to carry more than that.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 8:58:19 PM EDT
I have 15 3rd gen Smiths and a bunch of Glocks along with AR's, AK's, HK's ect. I think I just under 1,000 mags for all my shit. I still need moar. If they are ever banned again you will know why we bought all of them.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 8:59:25 PM EDT
They will come for mags again, mark my words. Get yours while you still can, and while they're darn cheap too. Remember mags being $25 or more a pop during the ban?

Zombies............
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:01:26 PM EDT
You buy mags because you never know when you'll need more than you currently have.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:03:08 PM EDT
Because in 1994 I was 20 and I spent the next 10 years begging and borrowing and scrounging for mags like a bitch.  They are cheap and plentiful now and I am not going to suffer from crap overpriced mags ever again.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:03:16 PM EDT
yea i dont get why some people here have so many (50 or 100+), but it would be cool to have my whole stock of ammo loaded in mags

Because mags eventually wear out, and you want to have enough to use now, and later on down the road. If there is another ban some day, it would be better to have a bunch of new ones stashed, than to have to scrounge around to find some really expensive new ones. (All the while saying, "I wish I had bought more mags back when I could have".)
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:04:15 PM EDT
Apparently you weren't around from 1994-2004.

The '94 ban drove the prices thru the roof.  Don't be caught short again.  Mags are designed to be expendable.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:06:56 PM EDT
quit trolling.

i have what i have and you wont find out......

Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:08:33 PM EDT
if you have to ask, then you won't understand the answer
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:09:21 PM EDT
Did you own guns during the ban?

I have three PMags and two steel ATI AD ops mags

after one range trip the steel ATI mags look like they're not going to be pretty for long

I only need a handful of functioning reliable mags, I'd say 5-10 per rifle seems about right.

they're cheap, look at any other weapon platform and you're at some crazy high prices quick.

edit: assuming there isn't an other standard cap mag ban
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:10:51 PM EDT
Because zed doesn't stop shambling your way while  you fumble with stripper clips.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:11:06 PM EDT
Magazines are consumables. They wear out, or are more often as not damaged in some way during training. There have been a few times I've trodden on a mag and it's gone "pop".

Might as well have spares.

You need enough to build a fort.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:11:25 PM EDT
i lived through the horror of the 94-04 assault weapon ban, I expect there will be another eventually.

I also would rather have enough mags on hand for a SHTF so I dont have to stop and reload magazines.

Zombies aren't gonna wait for you to reload your magazines.

Buy mags.....buy them now.

TRUST US.

It was frustrating to see a $10 mag going for $50 during "the ban".

(never mind the full-auto situation still going on...)

Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:17:14 PM EDT
I like to have 7 mags per rifle, and keep all the rest of my ammo on stripper clips.  With a handful of speed loaders stored randomly in my 5.56 ammo cans, it'll be easy to reload the mags as they're being emptied.

not if your fighting for your life/lives. You may have to throw the shit in a pack and go.

I keep all my mags loaded because it takes forever to load them, it dont take very long to empty them.

These.  That fuckin ban traumatized me.

Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:23:55 PM EDT
Without magazines guns are clumsy, single-shot weapons.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:26:39 PM EDT
Thanks for reminding me - I need to get some mags.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:34:34 PM EDT
There is a very simple reason.  If the balloon goes up there will be a lot of people in need of shooting.  If you have enough mags, you don't have to worry about reloading them for a while.

Frustation was wanting a Glock 21 and never getting it becuase there was no way in hell I was going to pay $150 for three fucking rounds.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:38:05 PM EDT
Because they wear out.
Because I prefer shooting at the range or in class than loading mags at the range or in class.
Because for every 10 i buy i only keep 4 or 5.

Hehe...yeah, that sucked too.

The price on Beta-C mags was, in percentage terms, pretty minor in the grand scheme of things.

Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:39:29 PM EDT
~Because they're cheap and plentiful now and may not be in the future
~Because my guns aren't just for defense in the home, and if I have to reload, I'm going to clear it and slap in another, and I probably won't be back to pick up the empty
~Because I imagine reloading mags round by round in a fight would really suck
~Because my guns are just overpriced clubs without them
~Because it pisses off people who say I shouldn't be able to

This sums it up very well. I have around 100 mags and plan to add another 100.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:47:58 PM EDT
Because reloading mags during a massive zombie invasion ain't worth shit!

Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:48:25 PM EDT
Stocked up on prebans because mags eventually wear out, and there is a finite supply. I don't feel like having to buy 400 dollar magazines 30 years from now when NYS gunlaws still haven't been fixed.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:50:27 PM EDT
My opinion is...

Magazines only go up and up in price. And, they are the most likely part of a firearm to fail or break.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:51:51 PM EDT
Because.....one is none, two is one, three is two, 265 is 264.....ect.

Because the day that you need more mags that are already loaded, it's going to be really really important to have them.
It may not just be you that's using them also. I just bought another AR... in case I need parts, or to arm another dipshit that doesn't have a rifle.
...that, and my other AR is piston driven, and I want to see how it compares to a DI AR. Been a while since I shot one.

Zombies aren't going to wait for you to load mags

You could probably attribute 70 percent of our gun related items, to the Governments desire to ban them.

For those of us less rational and more paranoid, the ratio would be higher.  95 percent or more.
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:54:32 PM EDT
SHTF and i have a rule of thumb 10 mags per handgun, 10 mags per rifle as a MINIMUM, i'm over 50 on AR mags get them cheap now while you can, you'll wish you did down the road
Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:54:35 PM EDT
Actually, I think I'll counter your question with another.

Why do I not have many MORE mags?

Must buy mags now.

Something along those lines.

I remember dating a liberal chick a while back.  She saw my two boxes full of PMAGs and asked WTF.  I told her about the 94 ban and how every time they talked about a ban I'd buy more  mags.  Maybe parts, maybe whole guns.  She could hardly believe it.  She'd ask why.  I'd say because they might say I can't.  Pure defiance.  It drove her crazy.  She'd say that wasn't the goal.  I said, "then stop banning shit".

Link Posted: 7/21/2010 9:59:27 PM EDT
i swear the guys at 44mag.com start these threads just to make me buy more mags....
