I did it for the money, glory, great retirement, outstanding benefits, and inherent safety of the job.
Truthfully, I don't think any cop really knows why they did it. It's almost like God decided that that was what you were to do when you were born. For most of us anyway. There are those that want power, to carry a gun, have personal issues etc. They're the ones that the rest of us can't stand. |

To help people and make the community a better place to live! Right! That's what you'll hear from candidates in an interview. How about driving fast, shooting guns, etc.... or better yet you became a cop because you love to write reports. How about because the job is challenging, forever changing, not always boring, and makes you feel good because you're giving something back to the community. People do this work for millions of different reasons. I do it because it is fun and I love the work and people I work with.

Drive fast, and play cowboys+indians for a living. I do get to do some good for people, but mostly I don't hafta grow up if I don't wanna.
I gets into your blood, once you start. I can't really imagine doing anything else. |

Same here. It's the family business. Then after my first hot call I was addicted to that adreneline dump. The rest is history. |

I don't like bullies of any type, and that is what most criminals are. The job gives the opportunity to inflict some retribution on people who get off on pushing weaker people around. Plus, how many jobs out there do they make TV shows about. It is frustrating at times but still the greatest job in the world, except maybe for porn star or F-16 pilot.

NOt an LEO hear per se, But I did do LE work for the USCG, and Now I'm an EMT, FF. I just think that most people in public safety did because they feel as though someone has to do it, why not me. Personally I felt a strong influence from god to help people in need, have done it my whole life. Was a life guard at 14, then onto service for this great country of ours. I got out before 9/11, and after it was all I could do to find a job where I could still be giving back in some way.
Remebering all those who served, are still serving and those who did not back from patrol.  Semper Paratus. |

Nothing else really intersted me other than racecar driving, and I couldn't afford to get into that. Pay is decent, health benefits aren't bad, retirement is fair, and I can carry a gun anywhere in the U.S. I damn well please. Oh, and protecting 1/3 of our government can be a rewarding job at times.

I remember my dad telling me I didn't want to be a CO. He was a parole officer inside the wall.
I remember telling my then new wife.."I don't want to be a guard". I now have 10 years in, IERT member,weapons instructor... WTF happened?

For the high blood pressure
for the negative press and endless ridicule for the endless lawsuits and scrutiny for the middle fingers and fuck yous... To prey on the predators, to bring victimizers to justice and fight in the war thats in our communities. My dad was military, I always wanted to be a servicemen myself but I couldn't stand moving away from my loved ones. So I serve where I live. Helping granny with her flooding toilets and flat tires is a plus too. As much as some people hate us, it feels good to go out and serve. |

Not balding don't have the genes for it. But 22 year old me is turning gray already! WTF?! Got the cynicism down too. Just can't see myself doing anything else. Best job ever. |
