Why do so many of us allow it to be owned by whackjobs that have no idea what it means or what it's history represents?  Are we too afraid of being associated with those that currently call themselves "militia" or are we too afraid of the repercussions of actually standing up and being counted?  In my mind, a militia should exist to support and defend it's community through all of the difficulties that every community is subject to.

General Lard Ass and Colonel Body Odor tend to be sort of off-putting.

Just kidding.

In to see where this goes.

And they should be.  Those people are not who we seek to lead our communities.

Not wanting to be associated with a bunch of fat guys rolling around in the woods wearing 3% morale patches carrying Tapco'd SKSs and AKs is the reason.

Also, the "should exist to support and defend it's community through all of the difficulties that every community is subject to." is pretty much the starting point for every street gang there is.

Call yourself a militia and state that is your objective, and everyone everywhere will assume you're just a gang.

Unless we go all Red Dawn and the Cubans parachute in Pueblo, CO, the term 'militia' is gone forever.

Ruthless demonization by every facet of the media, including conservative media. The term is toxic.

Bill Clinton and his  justice department did an excellent job of demonizing the word militia  in the,90 's

Eta: 8 seconds?  Seriously?

Seriously.  They did about as well as the "in your face" OC folks who insist on going to Chipotle with 3% morale patches carrying Tapco'd SKSs and AKs (there is a trend here, by the way).  They're the same guys that would be selling bricks of Thunderbolts at gun shows for $120.
