$7.50 here. I think it has something to do with not operating at taxpayers expense, kinda like the CMP and why the prices went up

NICS background check doesn't cost shit for TX gun dealers

BUT, if i have to go through the trouble of calling in a background check by itself for you, i.e. transer........................im making $20 bucks off of it........................its a case of beer after all!!!!!!!!

$5.00 in Florida and you need the background check in FL. even if you have a CWP.

Court 223 (aka Court in FL.)

NICS Checks don't cost anything /dealers charging for it are ripping off the public.

True about that background check even with CWP in FL. Somthing about florida's background check standards or CWP requirements dosent meet federal Brady II standard so we still have to go through the check.
Link Posted: 10/9/2004 7:14:47 PM EST
No charge in MN

plus Florida doesnt use the NICS system, they go through FDLE
Link Posted: 10/9/2004 7:15:18 PM EST
I never paid for one in Minnesota
Link Posted: 10/9/2004 7:15:51 PM EST
Pure dealer rip off. I'd be pi$$ed. You should get to know your dealer better. That's crap.
Link Posted: 10/9/2004 7:17:21 PM EST
I might be wrong about the NICS system with charging, im used to florida's FDLE check where they charge $5

In Vegas they usally charged $20

I have no problem with user taxes. I think people should be taxed for services they actually use (and not the rest!). The part that pisses me off is that, in some states, you have to pay a tax to exercise a constitutionally protected right.

And then there's the dealers who hide behind the mystery "background check fee". "Er...it costs me $50 to run a NICS check...that's why I have to charge you." I have no problem paying for a transfer, but don't blow smoke up my ass; there's no way the check costs that much. Just tell me how much you want. If it's too high, I'll pass; otherwise, you don't have to justify it!

Man you guys have it easy. In NJ the NICS cost us $15.00. We have to go through our state police for the NICS check and it is only open M-F 9-8pm and Sat. 10-5pm closed Sunday.

FUCK NJ

In VA, the state charges dealers $2 for the call.
Link Posted: 10/9/2004 7:46:31 PM EST
Daaaayyum! You guys are getting the bone. No charge in Wa.
Link Posted: 10/9/2004 7:48:01 PM EST
what a crock

nics doesn't charge anything to run the check.

maybe some states have a separate state check?
Link Posted: 10/9/2004 7:55:03 PM EST
Colorado doesn't charge. Gov. Owens wanted to charge but the NRA, CSSA, & GOA came down against it prettyhard.
Link Posted: 10/9/2004 7:57:10 PM EST
You guys are paying for this one way or another. There is no free lunch. Government costs money. You pay the money.

Nope. States that used NICS are free.

In Florida we use FDLE which means they call NICS for free then charge the dealer for making a free call. Beuracracy at work.

really, thats pretty stupid. Ive had to pay $50 in the last year here in FL for no reason
Link Posted: 10/10/2004 5:15:47 AM EST

If somebody wanted to charge me for a NICS check I'd be pissed enough to take my business to the local ice cream truck !
Link Posted: 10/10/2004 5:28:07 AM EST

I don't remember paying for it in NC, but if buying a pistol you had to have a five dollar purchase permit, that you turned in to the FFL at time of purchase. At one point you even had to have a non relative sign the permit application to vouch for you.

in my county, it's 3 character witnesses for a purchase permit, $5 each pistol, maximum 2 at one time, good for 5 years.
Link Posted: 10/10/2004 5:30:19 AM EST
It doesn't really cost anything to get something notarized either in most cases. You get charged for these things because the law allows it and it does take at least a phone call and usually means someone's got a responsibility (FFL Dealer) and has to keep a physical record.
Link Posted: 10/10/2004 5:36:35 AM EST
In Georgia, the GBI charges the dealers $5 and the cost is passed on to the buyers. Just get a carry permit and you don't have to worry about it.
Link Posted: 10/10/2004 5:52:59 AM EST
No charge here in Alabama. My FFL calls directly.

In Maryland, there's a $10 fee from the state to "voluntarily register" your handguns and "assault weapons" when you transfer them (voluntary as in if you dont volunteer to register, you cant buy the gun). I was buying a pistol from one particular store when he told me the fee was $20, I told him it was $10 by state law, he countered saying they charged $20 anyway. And this was on a used gun from his shelf! I'm never going back there for that and because the pistol was broken (MkII, barrel/reciever werent properly staked together, the barrel could rotate when the reciever heated up in the sun so Ruger fixed it for free; the shop charged me $25 to mail it back to Ruger, and then $20 for yet another background check when the replacement pistol showed up).

Some states act as the point of contact (POC) for some or all background checks but the NICS system is still utilized. The FBI doesn't charge for a NICS check but if your state is a POC the state may charge the dealer a fee for the background check.
Link Posted: 10/10/2004 6:01:33 AM EST
No charge in Kentucky. Some of you guys have it pretty bad.
Link Posted: 10/10/2004 6:01:49 AM EST
I have never been charged in Michagan eather.

Just looked at the recipt I got yesterday for a lower, no charge listed, unless they added it into the cost.

South Carolina has a once a month handgun law. No fee for buying longguns in NC, but as Lightning_P38 pointed out there is a fee for a permit (unless you have CCW).
Link Posted: 10/10/2004 1:23:21 PM EST
I never understood the "one gun a month" laws.
How can anybody afford to buy one every month.

The Kali-fornia govt charges the prolitariats a DROS fee of $25. I strongly suspect the State of Kali-fornia makes a profit on it.

DROS is actually $20.00. 1 Nov 04 it goes up to $25.00 tho...

Here the dealer is charged $9.00 They usually mark it into the price of the weapon. So you do not see it.

Its just another way the man sticks it to us!!

Not only is there no fee for the check in Texas, but if you have a CCW, there's no check at all!

You pay for it either way. If the end-user didn't pay cash for it, then everybody would as a general tax. I'd rather the fee directly reflect the cost of the check than a vague tax they can manipulate and increase whenever the legislators get an itch to steal.

NO, but the NC Sheriff's Assn has decided amongst themselves to limit you to no more than 4 permits per month.
I don't accept authority well........I pressed my local Gestapo Oberleutnant for 5......he refused.
I called my exceelent pro-Gun attorney........the attorney spent 30 seconds on the phone with him......I got my permits.
EVERY time I go in to buy permits.....I buy 5 just to piss him off!

F%^K YOU LEO!!!
