When purchasing precious metals , some places don't but they seem a little on the shady side.

As long as they don't record who is buying it.........who cares?

But I agree that in a free society, you wouldn't need an ID for anything except immigration and banking. (don't want someone taking your money out in your name type of thing)

I'm assuming precious metals (i.e. gold, silver). In many states, the law requires that a business that buys gold, silver, etc. record (and likely reports) the seller's information.

I guess I read Zero H too much and assumed everyone knew what PM means.

I'm a pawnbroker. I have to record the identification of people who sell me ANYTHING. I file a report with a third-party, for-profit business every single night. Police departments have to pay to access the reports I file . . . . process that for a second.

Here they do it because it is tax exempt.

Start a thread asking people to name the price of gold or silver and you'll see . . . most people don't have a clue about precious metals. And given the performance of these things the past couple of years, it does appear that ignorance is bliss . . .

Not if you pay with cash.

In California not only do have to show ID but you have to wait a week to get paid for it.

If they're not recording it, then why are they asking for it?

Why does Radio Shack ask for your phone number when you buy batteries?

Not sure but it was only 50 lbs of copper. I assumed it was to wait for some stolen metals to be reported.

They record (and presumably report) the SELLER, but not the subsequent BUYER.

They record the source of the PM (seller) so the police knows where it came from. They do this to discourage thieves from selling stolen property and as an aid in criminal investigations.

Verify who you are/your age? That's about the only reason I can think of to ask for ID when you have no interest in recording it.

I'm confused. OP was talking about buying PM's...not selling them.

I've never had to show my ID unless I paid with a check but they just wrote down my info on the check like they would at any other store. I've never shown my ID to buy gold or silver when I paid cash.

Example: I bought a roll of Silver Eagles Monday, they asked for my ID and photo copied with bill of sale.

That's not how I read his question . . .

"Why do they ask for your ID when "purchasing PM."

I took the "they" to mean the dealer is purchasing the metals. THEY (the dealer) asks for ID when THEY (the dealer) purchases PM from a guy who walks in off the street. The customer -- the one selling the PM -- is the one who has to supply an ID. When buying PM from a customer, the dealer records the customer's ID.

Or did I misunderstand his question? I have no idea why they would need an ID to sell you something.

Never been asked this before.
