I have several .22 rifles, one old single shot bolt, and the rest various semi auto I picked up over the years.
For some reason I want a nice bolt, mag fed .22. Name me some good one for not a lot of money.

How much is "not a lot of money"? For about $200-300 you could get a Savage or CZ 452. I bought a Russian Tula bolt action .22lr, it's pretty damn nice for $170.

I passed up those Czech or Polish surplus rifles back when they were $60.oo and really regret it.

They might be $100 now.

Perfect for Super Colibri 22lr.

Savage Mark II if you're just looking .22 LR. They run for about $230-$500 or so MSRP. I have their Model 93 Classic in .22 magnum (MSRP is listed at $566, but I got mine for around $300) and I love it.

This is a very nice looking Mark II (not mine). Looks like the G Model, which is about $230 MSRP.

This is the Model 93 F (~$240)

That is one sweet looking rifle for some reason
Link Posted: 9/19/2009 1:13:20 PM EST
They are nice for weak rounds like CB longs that a semi won't cycle.

+1 on the Savage.

I've got a Remington 513T(6 round mag) and a Remington 540x(single shot. Both are great. No idea how much they sell for now though.

Didn't see your price requirement at first...

Marlin 925R about $175 to $200. The plain 925 would probably be cheaper.

They're all over gunbroker for 400 and up. Which means I can probably find one for 300 or so, if I'm patient. And they're worth every bit of 3-400.

+1 on the Marlin

I've got an 880 Stainless Steel model (they switched numbers a few years back). Not the fanciest rifle in the world, but affordable and very accurate.

Savage MK II.

I found a BTV on sale for $220 at Gander Mountain.

Back in the 60's 70's and 80's Savage imported a number of Anschutz rifles. I have the model 164 Sporter, and I have to say it is tops.

I haven't ever priced one, but I bet they'd be in your price range.

Was just looking on GB, and I agree with the $400 part.

CZ452 if I had to start from scratch and buy new.

My favorite is my M-2 Springfield, but that'll run you over $1k if you find one.

For plinking, I have a Chinese Mauser 98 look-a-like in 22 LR. It's a sweet shooting little carbine.

I bought a NIB Mossberg 702 Plinkster for $95. I'd rate it at about OK-Good. I'm not a very good shot though, so you might have better luck.

Yup, I bought one for my girlfriend three years ago for Christmas and spent less than $200. It's been an excellent plinking rifle, and we always bring it out when we go shoot.

ETA - This one. Marlin 981T

CZ 452. That's my 452 American in .22 WMR on the left, Lux .22 lr on the right. Both are beautiful, and tack drivers.

I have the bottom one

Ruger 77/22. The reason you want it is because in the back of your mind you think it will shoot sub moa unlike a 10/22 out of the box.
Link Posted: 9/19/2009 1:54:31 PM EST
I recently bought one used so I could start deciding what suppressor I want to buy and then get the barrel threaded for the suppressor.

Mine is a glenfied model 25 I think, it is a marlin to some extent and depending on who you talk to it is almost identical, totally identical, or absolutely not related.

I need to clean it up a tad and take it out shooting this weekend but after that I get to do some reading on suppressors.

Anyway, that is why I bought another bolt action 22lr, my other one is tube fed and I am not about to want to unthread the suppressor just to reload the tube.

A few years back I bought that G model at Walmart for a hundred bucks. It's a fine rifle. For more I'd get a CZ.

Semi guns are nice, but there's a lot more ammo selection with a bolt action.
Link Posted: 9/19/2009 1:55:47 PM EST
I think what you really want is a 30-30 lever action.

That's what I bought. It's fairly accurate with the right ammo. I'd like to fix the trigger (which is easy) and I'm thinking about getting a .17 HM2 barrel job.
Link Posted: 9/19/2009 2:08:55 PM EST

I had a 77/22. I just never shot it. To me bolt action .22's are boring. I love my marlin 39a and other semi's 10/22's etc. The whole fun to me of .22's is blasting away.

Funny. To me, the lower power rounds are more fun to practice precision with, and things that make big bangs are more fun to blast away with. There is the question of ammo cost, though...

CZ makes a damn good bolt action rifle. top notch machining on every example i've seen.
Link Posted: 9/19/2009 3:49:57 PM EST
really inexpensive-Savage MKII, $117 at walmart with black synthetic stock.
Resonably inexpensive-Marlin bolt. Not sure that the mosel is, but it's the modern replacement for the model 80. Somewhere around $175
Slightly more expensive-Remington Model Five. About $230 unless at a Cabelas 4 hour sale for $189

77/22 picked up used from Clyde Armory in GA for $299

I wanted a 77/22 because I could use my 10/22 mags.

Fixed the trigger (Volq sear and spring, stoned trigger face, now has a 1.5lbs break)
Added Mueller APV
Added Green Mountain barrel, threaded from Hi-Desert Dog
Added Badger Ord. Tactical Knob, works a TON better than standard tiny knob.
Next up, decent stock

10 rounds, 50 yards, black area is the size of a quarter, .38gr Aguila subsonic

IMO Savage is the best for the money, although for a little more I think the CZ may be a little nicer. I love the accu trigger though.
