I am just curious, whoever made the laws agaist open carry but are okay with concealed carry, what was the logic?
I mean carring is carring right? Are they afraid if you open carry, the bad guys will try to take your gun? If that was the case, then would bad guys try to take the police guns? What do you all think? Travis

"Arizona is an open carry state. Handguns should be holstered when not actually in use to avoid issues related to brandishing or questions regarding the concealed nature of the firearm. The law states that as long as a portion of the holster is visible, the weapon is not concealed. It is recommended that at least 2-3 inches of the holster be visible."

As it is, people think nobody carries a gun. So they don't need one either. If everyone carried openly, you would see how many people actually do carry, and more people would think, "hey, the streets aren't running red with blood afterall!" Then they would think, "maybe I need one too." More people with guns, less crime, etc. And that would be absolutely unacceptable!
Well that's my take anyway. |

 In New Hampshire, you can (and I do) open carry except in a courthouse. You only need a license for concealed carry. Now I wouldn't recommend open carry in most instances just because you can.  But I agree that laws against open/concealed carry make no sense. |

Our constitution specifically gives the legislature the power to regulate the wearing of arms.
Thats why we don't have open carry. |

I'll be the first to go out on the limb and say.... we CC because we don't want to be the first guy shot in the line at the gas station.
I see open carry around my (not so little anymore) town and in one way I think it is a wonderful thing but something always brings me back to the good old element of surprise. I am speaking of personal experience here and not commenting on whatever laws are in existence. |

Who says you can't? It's legal here, and I've done it a time or two.
Generally speaking though, I don't like doing it. I don't like being the center of attention, I don't enjoy everybody staring at my pistol and I don't like people acting nervous around me. |

From what I've heard, open carry is technically legal, since the old cowboy days. BUT, all it takes is one person to call a cop and say it is scaring them when they see you in public. You can then be arrested for disturbing the peace, or something like that.
I may be wrong, but that is always what I have heard. |

I open carry quite often, most people never even notice and the ones that do just assume that its ok. I am a pretty polite guy.

Open carry is legal in Ky. I choose to carry concealed. Don't want to freak people out or make myself a target.
I do open carry any time I am in the woods. Me and my son go hiking. |

Here in OR, open carry is legal everywhere, unless a city prohibits it (Portland and Beaverton). The city cannot prohibit carry by those with CHL's. The law says nothing about concealing it. This is a subject of some contention. I say I can open carry in portland since I have a CHL, others say having a CHL (Concealed Handgun License) means it MUST be concealed. I have read the law numerous times and there is no statement requiring me to actually conceal the weapon, only that I need to have the CHL to carry at all in city limits.
In technical tems, I am right. In practical terms, probably not a good idea. |

I open carry frequently. I've never been shot first, never had my gun snatched, never been arrested for disturbing the peace, never been shot on sight by the police. I guess I've been lucky for the past 20 years.

I don't know about KS, but most states have a 'veto-proof margin' for bills which, if passed by a certain number of votes in the Statehouse, preclude the Governers veto. For y'all Jayhawkers, I sincerely hope that's the case. Call the Governers office and voice your opinion! |

I carried open for about four months before we finally passed CCW here. Only two people ever noticed.
Oh, and in Ohio we HAVE to open carry if we're carrying in the car. It's the law. |

I wasn't trying to find out who can and who cannot open carry, but more the logic behind why you can or can't, and the relationship of that to the CCW/CHL laws. More of a political thing I guess. Travis

Some places still have it. We do in Iowa.
Concealed carry is for your protection. If someone walks into a gas station to rob it and the customers But sees your open carry piece he has 3 options... 1: Walk out without robbing the place. 2: Go ahead and rob the place and attempt to disarm you by command risking his own death. 3: Shoot you in the back of the head take your gun. And while your corpse is excreting bodily fluids into your pants he robs the place. Reasonable people would say, he'll walk out. But you have to think like the unreasonable drugged out criminal in the scenario. He'll see an extra an $100 for him on the street for your gun. |

Portland Police Chief Mike Chitwood has made it his policy to have anyone found openly carrying in Portland to be disarmed. (Never mind that Maine law allows open carry...) Residents of Portland wishing to be licensed should be aware that Portland keeps an online database. During traffic stops, the database is cross checked against your drivers license and the information is passed to the officer. NOTE: this database only contains information on individuals licensed by Portland. Chitwood is no longer the Police chief in Portland Maine. I am not sure what their offical position on open carry is now. |

I'm personally of the mindset that open carry would reduce crime. You may not have the element of surprise, but it's a big deterrant to just show a gun. I'm sure it also wouldn't make you the first target, as a criminal is more likely to scout out another area with seemingly disarmed people.

Just to clarify.
There is no law in Texas against open carrying of rifles or shotguns. It is against the law in Texas to open carry a pistol. |
