It's the other white meat?

Fuck if I know.

Chop peppered bacon into pieces, sautee in cast iron dutch oven with chopped onion and garlic. Once bacon is rendered but still a bit chewy, add a pat of butter and fill the pot with chopped kale. Sautee until wilted, serve with grilled pork chops and steamed carrots. You're welcome.

It's awesome in a big pot with chicken, white beans, andouille sausage and bacon.

Well that right there is reason enough not to eat it.

Probably the same reason I obsess over collard greens and brussels sprouts.

Well no shit, if I fry up bacon and garlic and serve it with pork a bowl of cockroaches would be tasty.
Link Posted: 4/29/2015 6:45:13 PM EDT
So basically, it becomes edible with the addition of bacon?
Link Posted: 4/29/2015 6:45:46 PM EDT
Ah you edited your title. I was getting a good chuckle out of using the word hippie in a plural sense. You know like fish
Link Posted: 4/29/2015 6:46:02 PM EDT
Lots of Vitamin C, which gives them energy for all that protesting.

Link Posted: 4/29/2015 6:46:19 PM EDT
Kale is a super-food.

The Benefits of Kale

At just 33 calories, one cup of raw kale has:

  • Nearly 3 grams of protein
  • 2.5 grams of fiber (which helps manage blood sugar and makes you feel full)
  • Vitamins A, C, and K
  • Folate, a B vitamin that’s key for brain development
  • Alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid. (While kale has far less omega-3 than fish, it is another way to get some of this healthy fat into your diet.
  • Lutein and zeaxanthin, nutrients that give kale its deep, dark green coloring and protect against macular degeneration and cataracts Minerals including phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and zinc
Like was mentioned earlier...the hippies just got lucky this time.

It's lettuce with more vitamins. Don't be a food diva.
Link Posted: 4/29/2015 6:47:55 PM EDT
It has the taste of a nuclear titan taking a shit. Extremely bitter.
Link Posted: 4/29/2015 6:48:05 PM EDT
The same reason they're obsessed with gluten- they all came down with celiac disease which drove them to kale.
Link Posted: 4/29/2015 6:48:59 PM EDT
It's delicious and good for you. What exactly is the problem?

It also tastes good if you prepare it right. My wife makes a kale and mango salad that if you don't like, you probably have AIDS

The trick is it has to be with things that have a strong flavor of their own and it can't be totally raw. You have to either cook it or wilt it.

eta: fresh Brussels sprouts are great too

I tried kale once as part of the paleo diet. It was some vile stuff. Never again. Spinach leaves weren't too bad though. I've been off plants for so long though that eating even a little bit of greens makes me fart like crazy. Not worth it.

Kale is OK when prepared correctly or in the right dish. As for hippies liking it, hippies are just trendy idiots who follow fads. Some of those fads are 50 years old and others are 10 minutes old.

aphrodisiac

It's a fad like arugula was a few years ago. The fad will die out eventually.

I've eaten it for years and love it.

I know a couple that named their son Kale.

I managed to salvage them.... they are now Conservative voting gun owners.

Some new trend came up that made it popular.

Love the shit.

I sure hope so. My wife just planted about 10 acres of it in our garden. I asked her why, she said, "..."

She doesn't know why it's cool. It's just the latest fad in dark greens.
