Why are cigarettes taxed on top of the purchase price?

I thought taxes were built in to the purchase price. ...

What you do is find an activity that can be demonized and, instead of abolishing it or forbidding it, you tax it.

It becomes easier to stomach immoral activity if the state gets a cut.
Link Posted: 10/5/2014 2:44:24 PM EST
Don't forget you are paying that tax with income that has already been taxed. Tax everything!
Link Posted: 10/5/2014 2:47:40 PM EST
The excise tax on tobacco is part of the purchase price. State and local sales taxes are then on top of this.

Yes, a tax on a tax.

They once weren't double-taxed...at least in Oklahoma when I was in high school (when dinosaurs roamed the earth)

It made it seem like cigarettes were tax-free, because sales tax wasn't applied to them. Apparently the voters forgot they were ALREADY taxed, because when they started charging sales tax on top of the tobacco taxes already paid on cigarettes it made it seem like they were being taxed same as bread or milk.

.seems like that was about the same time I got pissed off at them for double taxing cigarettes and I quit smoking just to spite them. It was either then or when cigarettes went up to $1 a pack. I'd be damned if I was going to pay $1/pack for cigarettes.

probably one of the best things I ever did.

I thought some portion of the sales tax went to fund the school day insurance for those that buy it from the schools?

Link Posted: 10/5/2014 3:48:15 PM EST
They tax it to prevent consumption of the product. "Sin Tax". Then they raise the taxes higher and declare they'll use the extra money to fund "Stop Smoking" programs for the little children. In doing they create another government bureaucracy program that has to pay salaries, fund pensions and cover overhead.

Once the taxes kick in, and people actually stop smoking (due to the extra "sin taxes"), they cry and moan cause the "special programs" are not being funded enough. So they raise the taxes again, cause, you know, its for the little children.

Plus the tobacco was taxed before it was even brought into the country.

Smokes aren't the only thing taxed on top of a tax. Gasoline for instance.

Unless you are an illegal alien or other individual working in the cash economy. Then you don't pay income tax.

You just benefit from all the things paid for with income tax.

Then, when everyone stops smoking pretty much, they will do the same with Booze.

Gobmint loves the excise tax revenues generated from alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and explosives. Some anti-gun politicians have proposed a 500% ammo tax after mass shootings in the past.

If a six pack of even canoe sex beer was 12 bucks, I wouldn't buy beer at all. I'd homebrew, exclusively.

Taxes and registration fees are used to fund government and used as a tool to control demand.

Want more people to buy houses? Implement a tax credit.

Need popularion growth? Implement a child tax credit.

Want people to smoke/drive less? Tax the hell out of gas, smokes, etc.

Want to spur consumer spending? Implement a tax free day for back to school, it encourages consumer spending and makes it look like you care for your next election.

It's a simple excise tax. You're paying a flat rate for a tax stamp. Same idea as the tax stamp you have to get to transfer an NFA weapon or the tax stamps one had to get for paper in the colonies in the 1760s. It has nothing to do with the price. This sort of excise tax has been utilized since before this country was founded. Actually, IIRC, it is the vendor paying for the tax stamp and he simply passes on the tax to you in the price he charges. You pay it indirectly.
Link Posted: 10/6/2014 2:10:39 AM EST
It's a stupid tax. If you're stupid enough to smoke, you won't mind paying $8 for fucking cigarettes.
