I wanted a flip phone, but didn't want to pay the exorbitant prices AT&T Wireless wanted.  I found one on Ebay that was billed as being compatible.  I got it, and AT&T refused to activate it, saying it "wasn't compatible with my plan."  I sent it back and the company called me.  They said I needed an upgraded phone that didn't require a SIM card.  I paid more, and today the new one arrived, with the promise it would work.  No dice.  Evidently I'm getting screwed by both companies.

They do what they do, because they have all of the service, and all you have is money to offer in exchange.

My advice is to ditch AT&T and go with Tmobile or Cingular, they use nothing but GSM phones nowadays and you can switch out your SIM cards all day long with them.

Umm...AT&T and Cingular have merged.

And T-Mobile fucked me over.

Yep.  They haven't quite MERGED  yet, but will.  I don't know the time frame.  I'm about to go buy a new phone and just switch over to Cingular.    Personally, I haven't had any serious problems with AT&T.  Sometimes it takes forever and a day to make a call... hit the send button, and maybe 60 seconds later, you'll get a ring.   Weak signal in some places... or getting strong signal on standby to have it diminish to almost nothing when I make/receive a call.   The new phone I'm going to be getting should remedy quite a bit of that as it's better than the one I have...

Hopefully Cinglar will also never give me any SERIOUS problems.

I had Verizon and the service was good. I only have my phone for an emergency and a plan is just a waste of minutes for me. So I dumped Verizon and bought a Virgin mobile phone. It has no contracts and is pay as I go, and thats good for how I use the phone.

We used the site Letstalk.com

I called on a Monday morning and by noon on Wednesday we had the following:

1. Two activated Motorola V60 flip phones for only $50 each after rebate. Cingular wanted $150 or $200 for the same phone with a 1 year contract.
2. As mentioned above, we only had to get a 1 year contract.
3. My wife's phone number switched over from Verizon.

All in all, it worked out great for us.

Dave, sounds cool!  They don't have the phone I want (yet)... it just released and even the carriers that support it don't show it on their sites yet.
