#1) Ten day waiting period on everything - just bought an M1 Carbine that I can't touch for another 10 days. Never mind that I have better than a couple dozen firearms in the back of the truck while shopping at the gun store. Sales clerk treated me like so much scum just reminding me how much I hate Turners.
#2) $1.99 to $1.75 a gallon for regular gasoline. #3) 100 degrees plus, 80% humidity and smog. #4) Having to drive +80 miles an hour on the highways with 1200 pounds of guns and ammo stuck in the back of my 3400 pound SUV just to keep up with traffic in the slow lane. Good Things: #1) The women weigh an average of 75 pounds less than the rest of the corn fed US and look good wearing halter tops and short shorts. ... I'm still working on number two. |

Having been there once, I can't see anything dragging me back there in the foreseeable future. I took a big piss right in the desert at the last exit before crossing back into the free state of Nevada.[:P]
Not that Ohio is all that great, but it *is* a Class III state, Camp Perry is an hour and a half away, Bulletfest is an hour away, Tusco Rifle Club, one hour (home of the best steel plate shoots around) Also home of my favorite *private* gunshow, the OGCA, 18,000+ members strong!!! I paid $1.13 per gal for gas last week, went up to $1.19 this week. Winters here suck, but I make the best of it by shooting anyway [%|] No CCW here yet [:|] I'm sure I could think of other stuff I hate about Ohio if I thought about it some more[;)] |
|
Everytime I come up with a reason that Missouri sucks, I think about the short period of time I spent in California.
No offense to the guys here from California, but everyone I've ever met from there had something wrong with them. Mentally. I'm not kidding, everyone had a screw loose in some kind of major way. My wife excluded of course. And from my experiance there, and I traveled from San Diego to San Franciso, and lot's of places in between, it seemed like a real shithole. |

Paul
Sorry to hear you have relocated to the Peoples Republic. From reading your previous posts I gather you had to go there on business. I just got out last December after living there for 12 years. Don't miss it one bit...except for the women. Good to see Tuners is only making you wait 10 days. Everytime I bought from there I would have to wait 12 days. |
|
No offense taken, for I do agree with y'all. Most of my friends are from out of state, personally I find the majority of the natives are not trust worthy, or maybe I just happen to come across them everyday of my almost 20 years spent here.
Most store clerks are rude, don't greet customers and say thank you, most girls are gold diggers, the sincere looking "friends" probably want something from you, you're judged by what you wear and drive, and for the most part, it doesn't pay to be nice (you'd get taken advantage of) Whenever I go out of state to visit I'm always shocked that I'm treated so well, when in reality I'm not treated any different than anyone else. Having lived here for so long does give me appreciation for people that are true and honest. |
|
I'm in the military (Navy) and they transfer you with "orders" not "suggestions" [^]
The nice thing is that I'm the senior Navy NCO at the command so things aren't "that" bad: 2) I get to go home to my wife, dog, and firearms every night - not just 80 days a year like aboard ship. 3) San Diego and LA are 90 minutes away, Las Vegas about 3 to 4 hours away. 4) If a gun fires in the desert and no rangers are there does it make a noise? 5) I can't deside whether to spend the money I use to spend feeding my AR's on a personal water craft or an ATV. 6) http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?id=30398[:P] |

If what you are all writing about CA is your only experiences, then I don't blame you for having a poor opinion of this state.
People are people, no matter where you go. Some are assholes, the majority are not. Did you get out of the big cities? See the rest of the state, there are some really nice people out there. And as to the issue of CA being a shithole, I don't know where you were looking, but CA is known for its' scenic wonders. And San Francisco, as large cities go, is beautiful. You all need a guided tour of CA. To show you the real CA. AR15.com tour of California! Bet that would get someones attention! But I still wouldn't move here if given a choice. |

It is/was my home. As far as your points. #3) Try TX with 90 degrees and 100% humidity. The smog can be alleviated by living near the beach. God I miss the beach. I miss CA weather and scenery damit!!!! #4) Wait till it rains. Good things in CA. Food: The most diverse and best damn cuisine can be found in CA. Except Mexican food I think TX has got CA beat on that one. Scenery and Climate: You have mountains, desert, cities and beaches. Catalina and Santa Barbara Island are wonderful. And what part of the country can you go skiing and surfing all in the same season. The Women: Ahhh the women. They talked to me in CA and some even went to bed with me for some fun. Unlike here in TX. I think I grew an Imbroglio persona here. Jobs and Economy: Like it or not CA is one of the largest economy in the country...STILL. |

I lived in LA County for 3 years, and as soon as I married my Bay Area girl...we moved back to Houston in the good ole Republic of TEXAS (not to be confused with the radical ROT whackos).
I enjoyed the female scenery in CA, and the weather. But not much else. Food was all Italian/pasta based. Gas was high. People were flaky...meaning they just don't typically think of other people and how their actions affect them. The one characteristic that PISSED ME OFF was when someone told me they would do something for or with me and DIDN'T, their excuse was usually something like "well it was a such a beautiful day we decided to go roller-blading and the time just got away from us and then we couldn't come help you like we said." If you get a chance to hang out in the more rural areas, the people are GREAT! But get anywhere near a major city, and it's full of weirdos. Do you know how we know that California is the lowest elevation state in the U.S.? All the "loose" things have slidden and stayed there. Why is California known as the "Kellogg's State?" It's full of Fruits, Nuts, and Flakes. LONG LIVE TEXAS! God please let me never be forced to leave it! |

View Quote Ahh those were the days...Rollerbladding in Newport Beach. Hanging out at Sharky's or the many other watering hole lining the beach. Picking up on the lil chiky snacks that walked by. Or Huntington Beach and the Huntington Brewery. Yeah I could see how time could slip by. That's why I never went unless I had nothing to do but pass the time. Man I truly miss the beach, and more importantly, the women at the beach. |

"I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me." [BD]
Just another right wing California gun-owner. "Come on in, the non-compliance(w/ AW bans) is fine." |
|
It's a real shame about California. That was as near to paradise as you could get. Perfect weather, fantastic natural beauty, and no matter what you wanted, it was no more than 2 hours away.
All ruined by left-wing politics that allowed criminals, gangbangers, and freaks to destroy it. It would still be great even with the swarms of people if not for the lefties. They had it ALL, and threw it away. Now the lefties are fleeing the mess they made, and infecting other states. |

I'm sorry all you California guys out there, but ALL the problems with America start in your state and head East. Just a casual observation.

M1 Carbine is an outstanding little gun.
Which one is the most accurate? USGI? Nope. IAI? Not even close. Universal. Yep. The $300.00 Universal. The Universal uses a Marlin microgroove barrel....They even cost appreciably less then the IAI's or USGI's, and shoot substantially better. Wish I had one.... I have shot 3, and of the 3, they shot so much better then any other M1 Carbine I had ever fired, I had to research "why" that was. Turns out they are made with superior contracted materials. USGI's sell for a lot of $$$ because they are collectable. IAI's sell for too damn much because they are the only M1 Carbines available in current production, so they can charge what they want and any rookie who wants a carbine blindly pays it. Sell that POS and trust me when I say get a Universal. They have some on GunsAmerica for pretty reasonable. [:)] |

All you guys who bag on California crack me up. It's probably the best damn state in the union! Aside from NY, we set the trends from which all follow. You can't judge a place simply by the freedom to fire full-auto from your desert backyard. As far as problems, it has the same problems as every other populous states. Someone mention ganGbangers. Have you guys not seen documentaries on white bangers in Iowa & Nebraska, for instance? Don't want to start a flame war, but I LOVE THIS STATE! Texas? Idaho? You're kidding, right? Just ship me my steak & potatoes and stop being jealous! ;-) Lordtrader, c'mon back to the land of sun-drenched beauties, bro. We miss ya!

To Budda who thinks people are jealous of Kalifornia! I am sitting in Los Angeles right now in a $700 a month single apartment (doesn't even have a bedroom) and paying $2.07 for a gallon of gas. I have been here for too damn long now working and can't wait to get back to my free state of North Carolina. I have 15 grand in the bank right now and when I get back to a free state I will excercise my constitutional rights (which I do not have in Kalifornia) and buy a couple AR's to add to my collection. I lived in Los Angeles for 12 years before I wised up and moved out. Here is my list of reasons why Kalifornia sucks.
1. Rent is highest in nation 2. Gas is highest in nation 3. Parking is a bitch 4. AR's and AK's and anything that is fun to shoot is illegal 5. Dianne Feinstein 6. Barbara Boxer 7. Gray Davis 8. Black-outs 9. Golddigging whores 10. Earthquakes, mudslides and riots If at least 4 of these things would go away (AR ban, Diane Feinstein, Barbara Boxer & Gray Davis) I might be willing to move back. |
|
Other than this past week, humdity is rarely a problem in SoCal, more of a dry heat.
dolphin72, don't live in L.A. itself. Go 30 miles east and you can find way cheaper rent, no parking hassles, and a lot more conservative folk. Everyone always assumes California is Los Angeles and San Francisco. I have lived in Calif my whole life(40years) I have never had any problems with earthquakes, mudslides, riots, etc. I have worked in Boyle Heights(east L.A.)for 12 years and have never had problems with the Hispanic population. Now Boxer, Feinstein, Peralta, etc are a major pain. Oh yeah, Lordtrader, come back to the darkside(me dangles a blonde in one hand and a in-n-out burger in the other) |
|
Quoted: Here is my list of reasons why Kalifornia sucks. 1. Rent is highest in nation 2. Gas is highest in nation 3. Parking is a bitch . View Quote 1. New York City, Washington DC, & just about any East coast beach community has higher rent rates. 2. Chicago has the highest Gas prices in the nation. 3. Parking anywhere in California is easier than just about any major east cost city. |
|
Quoted: Oh yeah, Lordtrader, come back to the darkside(me dangles a blonde in one hand and a in-n-out burger in the other) View Quote Gee I wouldn't know which to eat first. LOL As far as cost of living, I will use me as an example. I made close to 6figures in CA but I also had a $1200 a month rent. Here in TX my income was cut by over a 3rd of that. My cost of living was also cut by a third. So when you say High Cost of living you also need to say High Income to go along with that. As I said I have come across cops making 80K a yr. I also know of a New Orleans cop who make only a 3rd of that and lives quite well. It's all relative. All CA needs is to get rid of its current Gov't. and liberal views and baby it will be a state like none other. Grass is always greener depending on who you talk to. |

Grew up in San Diego, 963 Oliver, two blocks from Pacific Beach just south of crystal pier, one block over to mission bay...
That I miss. Later moved to jamul in east san diego where I went from getting up early to go the beach to getting up early to feed the damn hogs, cows, chickens, dogs, and cats. That I miss, just not the same way. Now I live in Phoenix, no beach, no hogs, cows, chickens...have the dogs, no cats...have since added 4 kids, a wife, mortgage, two car payments, etc.... Get to go to the dessert, lakes, mountains at will. Get to shoot, hunt, shoot...whenever the hell I feel like it. When we go to Kalifornia to visit family and friends, I can't wait to get the hell out of there. The place as gone from paradise to a shit hole in just the last 15 years. You could not pay me enough to move back. |
|
Quoted: Living well on $26k? He must be on the take, getting a little more on the side. He's from New Orleans, after all. View Quote Nope not on the take. His rent on a 1bdrm apt is 400mo. I was going to keep my opinion to myself but since you mentioned NY I have to set you straight. You are saying NY is number 1 and cali is next. Well let me tell you a bit about NY. If you want to buy a house in commuting distance to NYC you can expect to pay more then double the national average(if not more). Car insurance is about double. People are so superficial that you are looked at by what you wear, drive and your home. Money is what drives this place. Now about cali. I have been there and I don't think it is that special. All the things that NY is known for cali is also known for. The only thing you have that is better is the weather. NY and Cali both suck! Everyone thinks cause you make more money it is a better place. When you factor in the high taxes, housing costs and car insurance and so on you wind up making less then a lower cost of living area. I have this discussion all the time with people here. They say if you leave NY you will make no money. Well pay scale is lower but look at the whole picture and then tell me what you think. if NY was so great then why did the US census show that people are leaving the north east and moving south. I think 3 or 4 of the top ten places was in texas. A few were in florida, carolinas I think san clemente(cali) was on the list.I hope to get out of NY soon and my move will not be Cali. I want to point out 1 more thing. You said cali sets the trends of the US. Well look how America has been on a constant decline in the past 40 years. So stop setting the trends,THEY ARE DESTRUCTIVE. |

For about 10 years we used to rent a little cabin on Crystal Pier every summer, up until we were in our mid-teens and decided it wasn't cool to spend the summer with the folks. I've lived in NorCal for 21 years, but the San Diego area and SoCal are still the "real California" in my mind. It sucks to hear the San Diego area has turned to shit. When I was growing up in LA, I always considered SD as the place to live. It had everything you could ever want as far as the outdoors, as well as an ample supply of women.
Anyway, it's true that CA has the high wages, but if you live anywhere near the major metro areas the additional income does not come close to making up for the higher cost of living. Look at Silicon Valley. $150k family incomes are common, but you cannot buy a house worth a shit on that. To live the good life here, you need two professional level incomes. If you want a stay-at-home-wife, you better be a doc, lawyer, or own a business. For the majority of people, the California Dream has become just that -- a dream. |

man theirs a saying that goes something like this: you don't know how much you miss something untill you do not have it anymore!!! well its just the reverse with me. you just do not know what freedom is untill you actually have it. if they would split the state so that everything below sac and frisco is in its own state I might consider going back to northern ca. for one of the first things we would do is get our guns back and keep our water. you can defend ca. all you want but I lived there for 40 years and it sucks!!!! have to go back a couple times a year to visit family and its a nice place to visit but I would not want to live there. |

Wow, a firestorm. Look, I don't mean to belittle any other state. I'm just kinda tired of all the California bagging. Of course we got our problems, but so does every other populous states. C'mon folks, you gotta ease up on this great state. Doesn't the picture of that fine filly tell you anything at least? She ain't the only one if that's all you're going to judge a state by. By the way, I've lived in Minnesota, no offense to those fine folks, but I would never go back. I love the diversity of this state. As far as the 'wetback' comment, don't get me started on that whole discussion. Would anyone of us here want to pick lettuce, clean toilets, etc. for about $4.50/hr? And who's hiring these folks? Other Hispanics? Try the affluent white ruling class. I'm no commie, but as far as affecting the way California's government is run, these poor folks are about as effective as the slaves were back when. They take the labor scraps that no prideful Americans would ever lower ourselves to do. Ever see a white maid, except for Alice from the Brady Bunch? Anyway, back to the current thread, all this bagging on California reminds me of something Barry Bonds said, "They don't boo nobodies". He ain't 'xactly a statesman, but that statement is true. I admit to being kinda a wiseass right now, but it's all in fun rivalry. It's fun to be in the lead and look back ;-)

Kalifornia really SUCKS, I mean like the big one. Barring people in the military, everyone is Kalifornia is pretty screwed up. I wouldn't live again in Kalifornia unless death were my other choice. What with rampant crime, no morals in the population, horrible drug problem, and now more then 50% of the State of Kalifornia is on public welfare - Kalifornia is definately NOT the place to be! Besides in Arizona I can still wear shorts year round, the weather is awesome, the women are beautiful (and not screwed up in the head) and I can go shoot fifties out in the desert without looking over my shoulder all the time.
|
|
Quoted: Doesn't the picture of that fine filly tell you anything at least? View Quote Yes. It pretty much reaffirms what I have come to believe about most Californians. That they are a bunch or airheaded, vain posuers more concerned with image than substance. Who cares about anything as long as you look good? It never ceases to amaze me how people who claim to value the right to keep and bear arms can continually rationalize selling those rights out for easy beach access and ditzy women. Face it, you guys are cheap. Good thing our ancestors didn't colonize California first or we'd still be bowing to a king. |
|
Wow what a tread. I've living in Anahiem (1962-'66) San Diego ('81-82), San Diego (Ocean Beach '85-'89), San Francisco (Alameda '90-'91) and Riverside (east of LA '94-'98). Except for the first trip the rest have been military postings.
Its not that it's all bad it's that it could be 100% better without the damn liberals ruining The Construction with ever stroke of the pen. The weather I can put up with, same with the gas prices (food is cheap), and don't mind the "cultural" diversity as long as they don't mess with mine. What I've seen is a continual erosion of peoples rights, increasing tax burdens and worst - no end in sight. |

Quoted: Don't live in L.A. itself. Go 30 miles east View Quote That's about 4.5 hours by car is it not? |

I live in Riverside which is about 40 miles east of LA - and 100 miles from San Diego - but both are an hour and a half away!
On the 91 and 210 expressways once you get out of the city the posted speed limit is 65 but traffic is doing 80-85 miles an hour or better. Now that my truck is unloaded (brought a lot of guns and ammo [:)] down with me) those speeds are a bit easier to drive. The side streets near my apartment are 45 and 25 which are driven at 55 and 40 miles an hour. I'd have my speedo checked out but my GPS confirms correctly with it. No school zones are near-by, I assume those are posted 20 and driven at 35. |

Paul may I suggest you get a hold of the local AR15.com group there in SoCal. Great bunch of guys that get together for shoot that would rival the ones here in the free states. Great for letting of steam. Rick314 took over as the ringleader. He also shoots competitively if you're into that. Matter of fact some of the IPSC shoot are right down the street from you in Corona. CA really is not that bad at all. Lot of things to do to get your mind of things. As far as the driving speed, like I said wait till it rains then we'll talk.
