LinkDAYTON — Bill Goodman Gun and Knife Shows have tightened rules governing who can buy guns at Hara Arena and other Goodman shows.
Background checks of buyers are required by licensed and non-licensed vendors selling guns at the shows promoted by Goodman, company officials confirmed Monday.
"All vendors who have any firearms on display must display a ‘Background Checks Required’ signage provided by the promoter,” according to new guidelines posted online by Goodman.
The new rules have no effect on gun sales between individuals at the shows.
In 2009, city investigators in New York found problems at seven gun shows in three states, including shows promoted by Goodman at Hara, Sharonville Convention Center north of Cincinnati and the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville.
On Monday, Bloomberg’s office said undercover agents bought a Glock pistol with a 33-round extended magazine, like the weapon used in Tucson — with no background check — at the Crossroads of the West Gun Show in Phoenix. The rest continues at the link. I just don't get it; why are people so quick to jump on law abiding citizens rather than hold people responsible for their actions?? We don't need any more gun control, we need to enforce the laws on the books, harshly. I just had to send off an email to the "reporter".... Mr. Budd, At first I was going to give you the benefit of the doubt and consider your article about recent changes to Goodman's gun shows to be misinformed but after some basic research, which you either failed to do or decided to leave out of your article, I've come to the realization that this article is based on sheer ignorance and is yet another hit piece on gun shows and gun owners. Before I go any further I'd like to make you aware of the fact that my guns have not killed, harmed, shot, or even been pointed at anyone. Guns are not the problem, sir, psychopaths are. The first sentence in your article is completely false, "Bill Goodman Gun and Knife Shows have tightened rules governing who can buy guns at Hara Arena and other Goodman shows." No, Bill Goodman Gun and Knife Shows have simply instated a policy requiring private sellers to have "background checks performed on all firearms sold at the show thru "House FFL's". I'm not sure about the workings of this "House FFL" and since I'm neither a "reporter" nor someone who purchased a firearm at the gun show I really have no need to inquire to Goodman about the workings of it. It does sound to me like Bill Goodman Gun and Knife Shows has set up a way for private sellers to obtain background checks on potential buyers before a sale is made. This makes your fourth sentence also completely false, "The new rules have no effect on gun sales between individuals at the shows." Well, yes these rules do actually have an effect on sales between private individuals at Goodman shows; Goodman's website clearly states that any and all sales performed within the confines of the show by private individuals will require a background check. They even go so far as to offer a "reward" to anyone who "reports a substantiated violation of any vendor's commitment to perform a background check." Keep in mind, this is a Goodman requirement, not a state requirement. Let's move on. "In 2009, city investigators in New York found problems at seven gun shows in three states, including shows promoted by Goodman at Hara, Sharonville Convention Center north of Cincinnati and the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville." And what exactly were those "problems"? I'm betting the "problems" you refer to have something to do with the supposed gun show "loophole" that allows private citizens to do what is perfectly legal to do whether they be in their front yard or at a gun show. I can still sell you a firearm without performing a background check outside of a Goodman show; what I, and many other folks, will do is ask to see a valid Ohio driver's license and a valid Ohio concealed carry license. Why? First it's illegal to sell to a non-resident. Second if you hold a valid concealed carry license I know you have never been convicted of a felony, you have never been convicted of any drug related offense, and you have already passed a criminal background check performed by the Sheriff's office when you applied for your concealed carry license. Moving right along, "On Monday, Bloomberg’s office said undercover agents bought a Glock pistol with a 33-round extended magazine, like the weapon used in Tucson — with no background check — at the Crossroads of the West Gun Show in Phoenix." I just have to get this out of the way; I find it absolutely reprehensible how much the media in general has danced on the graves of the victims of the Tucson shooting in order to try to move their agenda forward. With that being said this statement about undercover agents is designed to do one thing; to link the Tucson shooting with gun shows. First off, this has absolutely nothing to do with a Goodman show. Secondly, as I have already covered, it is perfectly legal for a private citizen to sell a firearm to another private citizen without a background check in Ohio. Once again, as I am not a "reporter" nor a resident of Arizona I have no need to know if the same holds true in Arizona. Just for fun I performed a quick Google search for "Arizona gun laws" and the very first article that came up included the following, "The investigators also purchased a Glock 9mm –– similar to the gun alleged Tucson shooter Jared Loughner used –– without a background check from a private seller at the gun show, which is legal under a loophole in federal firearms laws. Although federally-licensed gun-dealers are required to make background checks before selling guns, private and supposedly "occasional" dealers are not required to conduct such checks." What is of much greater importance to me is how does Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City, have any authority whatsoever to run any kind of operation in Arizona? Additionally were the agents that purchased the firearm residents of Arizona? Is one required by law to be a resident of Arizona in order to purchase a firearm from another Arizona resident? I will never understand why the media in general is out to make law abiding citizens out to be the criminals rather than holding individuals accountable for their actions but this is just another glaring example and yet another reason why I refuse to be a subscriber of the Dayton Daily News.
