IIRC, during the 50's Germany had a real free market (more so than the US during the post-WW2 period) economic policy, and this led to exceptionaly economic growth. Alas, when people get rich & happy, they forget what is required for economic growth and they vote socialist.

Kinda why rich bastards in Hollywood & elsewhere lean towards socialism.
