Guess I read too much.
I recall reading about a frontiersman who was aware of the Indian tactic of shooting folks when they unwaryingly stepped out of their cabin. He defeated it by making a wood dummy which he clothed. The woman (don't know whether it was his wife or sister) would push the dummy partially out as if it was peering into the field. Mr. Dummy took a hit and the Indians attempted to storm the cabin. The frontiersman shot down the first Indian while the door was being shut.
