Rick Perry and Ron Paul are the only ones I've found.

Does it even matter any more for candidates? McCain had about as much military cred as you could get and Obama had zero. I don't think the public cares when you're running for public office.

I don't think it matters, even as I acknowledge that they are Commander in Chief.
Some of our better presidents have never served, and some of our really awful ones have. It doesn't seem to be a reliable predictor of performance. |

It matters greatly. McCain was a POW, not just any POW but a Vietnam POW in the Hanoi Hilton for years. While I respect that service fully I have doubts that the expereince as a POW for nearly a decade would not effect his performance as CIC. Atleast McCains conduct was honorable to a fault. While McCain was locked in a cage Kerry was throwing his wrongfully awarded Purple Hearts into dumpsters with hippies, this shows his stance and his lack of chracter. I don't think we have to have a CIC that served but I think that if they have served it helps them to honor what they are doing. At least if they behaved with honor before and after their term of service. IMO right now we absolutley need combat veterans in as many elected positions as possible men WITHOUT LAW DEGREES who have proven they can take the hard right over the easy wrong. Men who will not be swayed by lobbist, contributions, & PC bullshit. Men who will make a poltical debate rated R for language. Men like this scare the fuck out of spineless liberals and get all women to pay attention either out of fear or lust. These are men who know the only compromises are those that are made in order to save the situation, and lives stuck in it. |

Coolidge assumed office so we give him a break there. Harding never served and neither did Wilson. Taft was a bad ass for sure but he never served, other than Secretary of War and a martial governor. Cleveland didn't serve... The list is far from conclusive. But our better presidents have had military service and served as governors. |

If service is the main indicator of character, then we'd be best served nominating John McCain...
I don't really care if a candidate has military experience. I'd prefer a candidate who was a state governor and can balance a check book. |
|
It's not a big selling point with me, but that's probably because I haven't served either. I suspect that the only Americans who place a very high value on having been in the military will be those other Americans who served. The rest of us will assume that the military isn't the only way to gain character and personal integrity, and will also assume that not everyone in the military came away with those traits as well.

Why is military service so venerated for presidents? I served with plenty of good and honorable people but I also saw my fair share of scumbags, dumb-asses and trash.
|
|
You do realize that for many years we had a draft, right? Military service hasn't always been voluntary as it is now. It doesn't indicate whether they will be a good president or not. I served with honorable people as well as not so honorable people.

Rick Perry C-130 Rick Perry: He flew the world before politics Reporter News- Abilene ^ | April 23, 2011 | Sarah Kleiner Varble Posted on 06/27/2011 6:53:43 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife Rank: Retired as a captain Hometown: Haskell Crew job: C-130 aircraft commander Served in the Air Force: 1972 to 1977 Dyess AFB tour: March 4, 1974, to Feb. 28, 1977 He could either follow his dream and work toward becoming an instructor pilot in the sleek T-38, or he could fly the hulking C-130, planes that affectionately were referred to as "trash haulers" by Perry and his cohorts. "It was one of the great adventures of my life," Perry said. "I had a fairly pedestrian life until I was 23 years old." Perry could count on one hand the number of trips he had taken out of his home state by the time he graduated from Texas A&M University, but everything changed when he joined the Air Force. Flying C-130s, Perry lived in Germany and Saudi Arabia. He flew in Central and South America, North Africa and all over Europe. "I saw all of these different types of governments and I made the connections to how the people acted and looked, and it became abundantly clear to me that, at that particular point in time, that America was this very unique place and that our form of democracy was very rare," Perry said. " ... That was the greatest gift I received from my years of being in the military, and they really shaped my outlook on the rest of my life." Perry retired from the Air Force in 1977 — but not without one last adventure..... |

How do people not know about Truman? He may have fired the last shots of WWI and ordered the dropping of the atomic bombs that ended WWII.

McCain was a POW because he failed at flying. George senior did as well so his son was in the air guard. Kerry is a traitor just shy of Hanoi Jane, Ron Paul was a Gynaecologist during the Revolutionary War. Obamma is currently serving front line service in the war to destroy America.......

Quoted: McCain was a POW because he failed at flying. That's not even close to true and it's just not cool either. John McCain was a POW because he did one of the most dangerous jobs in the military at that time and his luck ran out. |
