I'm not talking about "authentic" old-country tacos, hand-picked from a single 450-year-old taco tree by Juan Valdez' great grandpappy.
Nooooo.... I mean "old school" suburban, midwestern American tacos, like your mom used to make in the 70's and 80's out of ground beef, with the hard yellow-corn taco shells. Tacos, mutherfucker! Well if you do, may I strongly recommend Pace's Taco Cooking Sauce. That shit is killer, man. Beats the fuck out of the taco "kits" you see at the grocery store, Old El Paso or whatever. Just brown a pound of ground beef, drain, add a cup of the Pace, and simmer. Dice your maters, shred your lettuce, and warm your shells while simmering. Dee-licious! |
We make em once a month or so.
Try the Pace Salsa Verde. ![]() Of course, I also stew chickens with tomatoes, chiles, onions, garlic then shred. Purée cooking liquid and veggies for a salsa. Place shredded meat, salsa, diced onion, and some cilantro in a doubled warm corn tortilla. Maybe some cotija if I'm feeling froggy. |
I have two El Paso crunch taco kits in the cupboard waiting.
Taco Hell Taco Supremes for the win. Chris |

Fuck ya, op!
My Mom made boxed chili relleno, giant wheat flour tortillas filled with salad mix and topped with old El Paso taco sauce and for tacos she would use tvp... ![]() (Parents are vegaterian...) ![]() |

I make the hardshell tacos at home from time to time, and I love all kinds of tacos. We grew up with soft corn tortillas, and those are still my favorite. I've got a pound of ground venison thawing out in the fridge right now for tacos, now that you mention them. I really like the fresh garden tomatoes with shredded lettuce on them, too. It was only in recent years that I discovered "street tacos".
You bet. We have them about once a week.
Quick and easy, and it's homegrown tomato time. ![]() A "softshell taco" is a damn burrito. ![]() Unless you quickly pan-fry corn tortillas in a little oil, so they're soft, and wrap everything up in that. But those are probably called enchigatos or some damn thing. |

Put the fragile crispy taco shell inside a buttered flower tortilla.
Make me all the time with low carb high protein wraps. Treat myself sometimes to the hard tacos though. F the hipster taco truck trend
Real old school tacos are greasy and come in a piece of brown bag paper= Mexican street style.

My Mom, bless her heart, can burn water.
However, by the time I was about 12, I was making tortillas from masa flour (which was NOT easy to find in southeast Missouri at the time). ![]() |

They changed the Old El Paso taco seasoning within the past few years. It was a staple growing up, and now it's total shit.
They are ok, I just hate when they crack down the middle.
Just picked these up for lunch... ![]() |

I am guity of enjoying a white privileged crispy taco occasionally. Wife jokes about taco Tuesday, but rarely does it (usually Totino's Tuesdays, but...)

Pace's is good. I prefer thin strips of stewing beef instead of ground beef.
Use half as much Pace's on diced chicken breast for variation. Layer of refried beans for "cement", meat of choice, shredded lettuce, diced tomato, shredded extra sharp cheddar and salsa topping. Sopapillas for dessert. Punch a hole in the end and pour in some honey. |

My white privilege only allows me authentic Taco Bell taco's being a northern yankee.
