Prof Xavier isn't an "active" X, so who is the most powerful?  Oh, and Jean gets killed by Wolverine, so that make him top dog?

Yep. She wrecks stuff good.

Even though the team has a revolving door of cast members Jean Gray stands out to me as the most powerful.

Not a comic guy, didn't know she is alive in the comic world.  Could Wolverine withstand her powers in the comics?

As Phoenix? I don't think anything could. She was capable of destroying entire planets.

Then she would only be the most powerful after she has taken them.

Omega-level mutants

An Omega-level mutant is one with the most powerful genetic potential of their mutant abilities. The term was first seen in the 1986 issue Uncanny X-Men #208, but was completely unexplained (beyond the obvious implication of it referring to an exceptional level of power). The term was not seen again until the 2001 limited series X-Men Forever. Some abilities depicted by mutants described as Omega-level include immortality, extreme manipulation of matter and energy, high psionic ability, strong telekinesis, and the potential to exist beyond the boundaries of the known physical universe. No firm definition has been offered in comics. Examples of mutants that have been confirmed as Omega-level include Jean Grey, Vulcan, Rachel Summers, Iceman, Legion, Elixir, and Franklin Richards.

There needs to be a distinction here between the comics and movies... especially when it comes to Jean, she is dead in the movies, and in the comics she was portrayed in many different ways....

Thing is, since the Phoenix powers aren't actually mutant abilities, do they really count? Have to go with Iceman on this one.
