A short story (possibly a dupe, but ah well...)


Liberal vs Conservative.

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, and was very much in favor of the redistribution of wealth. She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the addition of more government welfare programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father.

He responded by asking how she was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, "How is you friend Audrey doing?"

She replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus, college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties, and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over."

Her wise father asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA."

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, "That wouldn't be fair! I have worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!"
The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, "Welcome to the Republican Party."

Isn't it the struggle against extremism now?  IIRC some general was even more specific/honest and called it the "struggle against violent islamic extremism.  That would make the enemy any and all violent islamic extremist.

Every single enemy of our country. Every person who raises a weapon, wether it be a firearm or building a bomb, towards our country or it's forces, is an enemy and will be slain...in due time.

Any entities or persons that would attempt to invade privacy and/or take away American citizenship rights. In your poll I voted Islamofascists and they need to be stopped.  The greater threat is closer to home.

Mostly I was wondering how many think of the enemy in terms of ideology, how many think in terms of nationality or group membership, and how man think in terms of religion. I thought about adding ethnic groups, arabs specifically, but many would probably not know about the distinction between Iranians and arabs, and arabs of other faiths, etc.

Islam is a disease.  M118LR is the cure.

Muslims... all of em.  Although I have hung out with some fine folks from Bangladesh... they get excused.

I hate this catch phrase "war on Terror".

There have been terrorists documented in recent history since before WWI, argueably there have always been terrorists, since long before Christ was born.

Nation States have always been at war against terrorists.

This is nothing new. The only thing new is using an abstract concept like the "war on terror" as a political tool. I don't care who does it, dems, repubs, whatever. There has always been, and there will always be a "war on terror".  Only the groups, names, stated objectives and methods change. The innocent victims of terrorism always remain the same.

I agree, I hate the term as well (too.....cliche) but people understand it.

I think the best way to fight terrorism is to tie up all our loose ends.

Sure, we can wade into Afghanistan and other terrorist strongholds and kick butt, but that is not nearly enough.

It's things like securing our borders (The wall would be a good start), national ID cards, an immigration service that actually could function as one, and very close monitoring of any immigrants/visitors who come from areas or ethnic backgrounds with a high risk of terrorism.

We need to get over this "profiling hysteria". Insurance companies profile people all the time, and nobody screams about that (well I do, but nobody listens). If you can charge someone more for auto insurance for being a white male under the age of 40, why the hell can't you watch someone closer who is a muslim from Saudi Arabia under the age of 30?

Our policies, as a nation, have led us to be victims. When we can change that, we will have won our struggle with terrorism. The problem is not the rest of the world, there will always be those filled with hate for their fellow man. The problem is our inability to recognize what we have to do the keep that hatred out of our borders.

I'm not saying those of you with that viewpoint are wrong even; I'm saying you can't fix the problem from that viewpoint without resorting to GENOCIDE. We don't do that, because we're not Nazis. Wow, that is such an effective argument!

And yet, strangely, the hundreds of thousands of Muslims in ths country are not blowing themselves up on a daily basis at their local area shopping malls or public sporting events. Or even grabbing, say, the numerous and arguably very effective weapons they may freely purchase at their local gun shop. In fact, last I checked, there hasn't been an up-tick in straw-purchases or anything of the like which might coneal the A-rabs' evil designs.

Come to think of it, none of the millions of Muslims worldwide are hopping onto airplanes, or rowing boats, or just plain swimmin' across the ocean to get a stab at us. If they tried, Muslims here would look at them like the loonies they are, and they wouldn't have a support-base from which to operate.

Hell, Muslims overseas are having a hard enough time embracing Al-Qaeda and their ilk. You know why? Cause they're getting blown up by these scumbags every day too, and they don't like it! Fancy that! They don't like getting blown up either! And here I was thinking they all (every one of em',  they're all the same you know) grew up watching suicide bombings like it was soccer.

I tend to agree with that. Not a 100%, but it's a hell of a lot more sophisticated than some other opinions I've seen expressed here.
