I, _________, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

One of the best things I ever swore to. What's cool also is, when I got discharged, I didn't have to rescind it.

I remember. There were about 8 of us at the time, it was at the Meps center in down town MPLs MN. At around 2:30 pm on a thursday in March of 84.

Yep, I swore that one back in 1997.

In April I get to swear on this one:

I, (Full Name), having been appointed a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter, SO HELP ME GOD.

It sure took me long enough.

i do. although i think it has more meaning to me today than it did when it was given to me. It is done with so little meaning at a meps station that it is just another routine part of the process anymore.

Hell, i don't think 3/4 of the recruits i was with even knew what they were saying or why.

Ever heard the president's version of the oath of office? There's something in there that goes like this, "I promise to support and defend the Constitution of the United States to the best of my ability...." What kinda crap is that?

I did it in Dec. 1972. To this day it is, by far, the best thing I ever did. Got me out of the dumbshit lifestyle I had at the time and gave me a career.
I think the U.S. should make it mandatory that at the age of 18 all are required to do at least one stint in any service. It would do wonders for the social problems that exsist now. Young people would be better adapted to mature and be productive, not only in there own lives, but in society as a whole.

23JUN83 to enlist in the USMC Delayed Entry Program.
28AUG84 to accept my warrant as a Marine Option Midshipman in the NROTC Unit at the University of Michigan.
16MAY85 to enlist active duty Marine Corps after losing my scholarship.

And I STILL mean it.

I think he's taking exception to the fact that the Pres is given an out not afforded to military personnel. We had to do it right or die trying. The President only has to try real hard.

April 12, 1982 was the first time I said that under oath.

Did it once in Korea, too, administered by Captian Richard E. Bloss, the finest officer I ever served with. I forget the date but I'll never forget the sentiment, taking the oath in the shadow of North Korea.

I still consider it a sacred oath.

For all who served and replied to this thread, God Bless every one of you. What a unique and distinct "Club" we belong to. We will forever be "Brothers".

And as far as I'm concerned, I (and I'm sure you all do too), continue to carry that Oath in our hearts until the day we die.

I meant it then, I mean it now.

(Edited to add: I was 6'01" tall and weighed 132 lbs. A doctor gave me a quart beaker and told me to go to the water fountain, fill it up and drink it twice, don't go to the bathroom, and meet him again next to the scales to weigh-in again as soon as I was finished. The minimum weight for my height was 135 lbs and I only weighed 132! I could eat anything I wanted back then and never gained a pound - sigh- those were the days!)

15 Sept 1983 was the first time. I believe I said it again after every promotion, and I know I said it 3 more times for re-enlistments.

It sure did suck ass to say that "obey the orders of the President of the United States" part when that dishonorable shit stain Clinton was in office.

Yup I remember......June 1976........Coast Guard Recuiting Office Portland Maine...........Dad(Former Marine) watching proud as a ....well Marine!.........Mom watching tear in her eye as her first born son joined the service...........I was one of 3 people out of almost 300 in my High School Class the joined the service...........It was'nt very popular back then!!

This child is still under oath.
I wonder what would happen if I did something to support and defend the constitution of the US thirty years later and got called for it, wouls SCOTUS defend me?

I wonder.
