Some of the extremely expensive tactical knives I see really got me wondering about this.
ETA: Then the poll about pistol whipping made me think to do a poll |
I carry a knife at all times.
I hope that I never, ever have to use it. Because I probably will die if I have to. |

Relax before some whoops your ass with a pistol. |
I have given and received. I had a rough childhood and scars to show for it.

I always have one or two knives on me. A folder and a multitool most times.
Unlike a gun with is nearly always a death giving device, a good knife makes a handy everyday tool. I would never pull one in a fight unless that fight is threatening my life. The same rules for pulling a gun aply to pulling a knife |

OW! Got me! |

On two occasions.
The first time I had a boxcutter. I ran into an "old friend" in high-school and he and a few other assholes decided to jump me. He got 35 stitches to his face, I dont know about the rest of them, but they were in a similar shape. The second time, I was in Walmart. We were in the Toy section looking at legos for my nephews, when a "person-of-spanish-decent" attempted to grab my CCW. I punched him in the face, and than pulled out my knife (not wanting to draw-down" in walmart). He said something to me, and than ran off. |

when i was about 15 i was in a fight with knives.i got a knife put through my hand and have the scars on both sides still. i did a bit of damage as well.i did not use an expensive knife, common boot knife was popular at the time, it wasnt a cutter but it was a good stabber and thats where i'll leave it.

I usually carry my folding Buck, hunting knife on me. I've never needed to use it but I figure if there's ever a robbery in Wal-Mart I can at least throw my blade at the robbers. If it makes contact great. If it misses no big deal; I can just point at the guy hiding behind the Cheetos stand and blame him.

I always carry a knife , but it's the last thing I want to fight with .
As the saying goes : How do you tell the winner in a knife fight ? Easy , the winner is the one that dies last |
What Chrome said! You're not going to find alot of knife fight survivors.

18 year old in the Phx area attacked his step father who was armed with a gun and killed him with a knife. The father had shot and killed his mother, shot his sister (who died a day or so later). the boy was shot in the process but prevailed. Bad deal but the kid is brave.

I have a buddy who teaches knife (and gun and other stuff) classes. He's REALLY into knives. I guess knife on knife fights are pretty unusual, more likely you'll get end up having to use a knife to fight multiple guys or resort to it if a tougher opponent is going to seriously injure you.
He doesn't recommend any of the really expensive knives. He likes benchmade folders. We've done a few knife classes. If I was going to seriously depend on a knife as a primary weapon (I usually carry a pistol) for example in an area where I would not carry a gun for legal reasons, I would prefer a fixed blade knife if legal. Getting those folding knives open and in use before your knocked on your ass is harder than it looks from the few classes I have taken. I've only lost my folder once, but you can get a fixed blade out and into the other guy a lot quicker, often with a folder it seems like you end up wrestling with the guy to keep him off you AS you open the knife, of course he fixates on the knife also and tries to grab at it also. edit-I pulled an axe in a fight once, does that count? The fight came to a pretty quick stop at that point and I did not end up giving anyone the tomahawk chop. edit I just ordered one of these. www.knifeworks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2986 I have heard these are good, but I would prefer a more traditional looking knife www.knivesplus.com/ka-bar-knife-tdi.html I don't know anything about using a knife with a reverse grip, but this guy is good and his knives are supposed to be also. www.shivworks.com/ |

Brandished once, but never cut anyone. I had a wrench in my other hand at the time, and felt relatively well armed.
I carry a knife at all times because CCW is next to impossible to get here. |
I know it's serious shit but that last kick in the Shivworks video had me laughing my ass off...I watched it again just to crack up some more. ETA: And, yes, pulling an axe should count. |

I have fought against knives on two occasions. Once as a bouncer, and have 2 nice scars on my left wrist area from "incidental" cuts after trapping the knife. I was also attacked by a guy with a WWI "knuckle duster" trench knife. We ended up crashing thru a front door and wrestling over the knife on my buddie's sofa. A friend tried to brain the guy with a dumbell and he ran out, resulting in a police car chase. I came away unscathed due to the knife being so big, I could control the thing and stay away from the blade. I have never pulled a knife on anyone, I have used my CCW on three occasions where threatened. I had a knife fighting instructor who was in a fight in the Phillipines and almost had his freakin' arm chopped off, he got cut so badly. I highly advise running before engaging someone with a knife, EVER! I have been VERY LUCKY, only dealing with untrained drunks!

I took a pistol class with him. He's a tough sob. Not a big guy but he's mean and fast as shit. For the kind of fights I think civilians get into I think he's the top of the list for someone that'll teach you how to survive a real knife or close range gunfight, but not for someone who isn't willing to get knocked around or have his ego bruised. You could tell who had taken the class before. The biggest, toughest guy in the class was the one who broke contact and ran like hell the earliest in an encounter. |

I voted "No"; but I've had situations where I've discreetly pulled the knife and flicked it open. I normally carry a Kershaw Leek or a SOG Trident.
I carry a knife just to open all the super bullet proof plastic packaging things come in these days.
grew up in El Paso, TX brandished many times never cut anyone.....tased a gang banger in the neck once though with a 35,000 hand taser
I see he did a course in Denver in '06. If he did one in '07 I would probably give it some serious thought. |

I was using a pay phone after hours outside a 7-11 in PDX. Was approached by two less then desirables while not carrying my CCW. Pulled my benchmade from my pocket, flipped the blade open so all could see and proceeded to cut a page from the phone book. The two bgs turned and walked accross the parking lot. |
Threaten to cut a guy's youtube off if he ever talked smack about my girlfriend

I pulled my knife once. I was walking to a late lab from my car in a parking deck at school in condition green. Next thing I know I've got my knife in my hand and I'm suffering an adrenaline dump. Half a second later(believe me, that half second felt like a full minute with all the adrenaline in me. Very disconcerting, I had full on tunnel vision going.) I realize I'm staring at a big dog that just stopped in the middle of the exit to the parking deck. If that dog had wanted to it could have messed me up. Even with my knife I doubt I could have stopped it before it did serious/fatal damage to me. Fortunately the dog decided to continue back to whatever frathouse it called home. Fortunately for me I had used the can before I left for school. I probably woulda needed a change of shorts after that otherwise.
Other than that encounter I haven't needed my knife for anything other than standard tool duty. |
I brought a knife to a gunfight once......literally. Haven't carried a knife as a weapon since.
Although, I've seen quite a number of folks shot and knifed, and by far, except for headshots, the knife victim's trauma is usually more horrific. sorry if that was too graphic |
Never had to , watched a guy get stabbed in the gut over and over again while wating for a pizza. I would rather be in a gunfight than a knife fight.
Hmmm...so if someone was beating you up and you pulled a knife and stabbed him...what would ultimately happen to you?
Darkstar117, If someone tries to grab your CCW you must not have been abiding by the first C. I'm not trying to hijack the thread but the irony is killing me.
Noone here needs a knife when they can just beat them into a coma with their keyboards.

Many years ago my then girlfriend and I were at a club dancing and having a few drinks. As we left and I was just getting into the car, behind me I heard glass breaking and yelling "I'm gonna cut you up, motherfucker". I yelled to my girlfriend "throw me my gun" as I turned and saw 3 or 4 asian guys holding broken beer bottles and coming up fast.
As they heard the word "gun", they stopped and started to back away and gave me time to jump into the car. I didn't have a gun but what I did grab was a Fixed Blade Buck knife that was in the car and I kept it hidden from their view. I'm one of those that scans the area when I'm out and about and I didn't see them or knew they were behind me until I heard the glass breaking and them yelling. My guess is that they were hiding and waiting to jump someone. I don't remember them being in the club but then again, it was pretty full. That's one story and the others are not as interesting. I have a couple of friends that were jumped by several guys and used a knife to defend themselves. I've had guns and knives pulled on me and have been shot at (they missed). |
I'd rather be arrested than be in a coma. I suspect you would have to prove that you were in fear of death or serious bodily injury. If I poke a coke crazed Mike Tyson with my multi-tool I expect I'll get a medal, if I use my cold steel battle axe to lob an arm off a high school boy I catch trying to steal the Sirius receiver out of my car I expect I will get into a little bit of trouble (except apparently in Texas and Florida...). |
As far as I am concerned the only appropriate weapons for a knife fight is a pistol, and only then if you can't make it to a rifle or shotgun...
Don't get me wrong, I usually have my pocket knife on me, but I use it in the lab all the time to strip wires and open boxes. |
I decided I'd run screaming like a little girl after I saw: Knife Defense - it's a little long, stick with it Graphic Material Warning: Knife wounds http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/6613/knife5um.jpg http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/2798/knife7zs.jpg http://www.dhivehiobserver.com/news/naifarucutter5.jpg |

I had one pulled on me once. I bluffed and told him he'd better know how to use it, because once I took it away from him I'd use it the way it was intended, etc. All that kind of bullshit. I was unarmed and his 3 buddies were trying to get me surrounded.
He maced me and ran away. I'm glad this was in the days before pepper spray! He was the aggressor, not me, by the way. It's not like I was mugging someone's grandpa. |
I've had to draw a knife twice. Thankfully, I didn't have to use it.
I'm sure with proper training a knife is a decent weapon. From my own experience, no one wins a knife fight completely. |
No shit - if someone pulls a knife on me and I don't have a gun, I'd better at least have a road flare to fling the hot dripping phosphorus off of. I've seen a guy carrying a chain cry like a baby and run away when some fucker sparked up a road flare. |
Jeeps dont put up much of a fight ive heard. |
That time doesn't count |
