shootsteel.com will have what you seek.. Id look into the 1/2 inch stuff minimum.  Id be willing to  bet the 3/8ths wont be thick enough for short range 556.

how close is short range?

have you thought about using frangible ammo yet?  I picked up some some 50 gr frangible heads from RMR bullets and worked up a load.  10 yards and no impact marks on the steel.

Moa targets

Btw most steel won't hold up well to rifle velocities at short range.

MOA Targets is the only place you should buy steel from. If you have any questions about range, call them up and ask.

Action target released this one for under 100 yard rifle duty. Angled at 45 degrees to help disperse the energy of close range rifle.

I bought a 6" 3/8 AR500 target from "Tactical Scorpion Gear" on Amazon just to see if they were selling legit AR500, and I would say it is. XM193 out of a 16" barrel just slightly dimples it at 75-80 yds. 7.62X39 (again 16" and 75-80y) doesn't hurt it. I plan to order their 2 pack of 12x20 IDPA's next. They're much cheaper than any of the big name companies I checked witj, around half price in some cases.

Has anyone mentioned MOA targets yet?

@nvgeologst might be able to answer

AR500 is going to pit with 556 closer than 100 yards

Under 100 yards you want it at a sharp angle 45 degrees or so to deflect some of the energy.

Even then I wouldn't shoot 5.56 under 40-50 yards without frangible ammo.
