Putting aside nationalistic bias for a moment (not that there is anything wrong with it), which country has/had the best National Anthem?
British (This one might sound, uh... similar to another song.) French Russia Badass New Zealand (Gayest) Ok, I guess I'm biased after all. 'Murika! |

America #1!
Followed by both France and Mexico. Those national anthems are catchy! I remember hearing the Mexican one as a kid growing up when TV channels from Juarez would sign off like ours used to. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8T9g7memUk Germany's is good too musically, but the current version that omits the 1st and 2nd stanza just doesn't sound right. It should start like it was written. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutschlandlied |

Ours would be a lot better if they would play it at the correct tempo, and every singer didn't try to make it their own.

'Murica!!
All bias aside, I've always liked the music of the Russian one. I don't remember what it says and it doesn't really interest me. I just like the way it sounds. ETA: Ours is the only one that makes me all pissy eyed, especially hearing it live. |

Your Russian version is actually the Soviet Unions national anthem. After the soviets "Obamaed" their economy and broke apart Russia kept the tune and scrapped the lyrics.

the best is the deep baratone guy who does the chicago blackhawks opening anthem
he does one of the best jobs of it i have ever heard |

Musically the "Star Spangled Banner" is a bit of a mess. It's a hard song for most to sing, which is why it gets mangled so badly.

If there is a better anthem, lullaby, ballad, song of any description than the Whitney Houston version of the national anthem, I've never heard it.never fails to bring tears to my eyes.

When singers turn the anthem into a vocal acrobatics production, they make it about themselves. The anthem is not about them, it's about the nation we live in and what we fought for. Sing it right or sing something else.

The U.S.A. has the best.
Give a listen and read the lyrics to Irelands anthem. Its very badass. Facing the SAXON foe is right. 26 + 6 = 1. |

I normally don't like anything that Jack Black does, but he did knock this one out of the park!

The National Anthem of the United States of America.
Though I do confess that from a musical standpoint, I love the sound of the Russian anthem. How unfortunate..... |

View Quote The best rendition I've heard/seen was posted here a couple of years ago--The "Texas Cuties" or somesuch. Very young, with killer voices, and they simply did it as intended, with magnificent results. Most posters in the thread said it brought tears to their eyes. |

The unofficial supranational anthem of the EU is nothing less than Beethoven's Ode to Joy.
Difficult to beat that. |

If I have to pick, it's a toss up between The Star Spangled Banner and L'Internationale.
Ours is badass because it says we're going to kill you, but the Soviet anthem is badass because it says they're going to be depressed, kill you, and then get drunk. La Marseillaise can be very stirring when it's performed with a full sound. It needs an orchestra and a proper chorus to really hit it, but when it's on, it's one of the best. It really makes you want to go get slaughtered by Englishmen, Russians, Germans, and Asians. |
|
Defenitly not Japan. The damn thing ends on a note that makes you think the anthem isn't over yet.
