I am thinking of wiring a house in order to network my computers, but also heard about a wireless network. Is this the next best upcoming thing? If so, I won't have to worry about running all that wire. If you have a wireless network or have used one, I would be interested in hearing what you think about it.

I have one and love it. CompUSA had a great deal on a SMC Barricade 7004awbr wireless router a few weeks ago, and I just "had" to get one. It's great. It allows wired & wireless connections and even has a printer port so you can print over the network. I only have a cable modem, so the 11 MegaByte/second maximum speed is plenty fast. The big problem with 802.11b wireless is that it's very insecure. Even the maximum 128 bit WEP encryption is easily broken because the encryption key can be guessed if you "listen" to the wireless traffic long enough. So if you're anal about security, forget it or wait till it's more secure. If you don't care about some teenage wannabe hacker watching you download porn^H^H^H^Hwildlife pictures, then go for it.

I have an SMC 7004WBR all-in-one unit (wireless 10Mbps, three wired 100Mbps ports, one uplink port, broadband router, firewall, printer port) and I love it. It sure beats running wires to every portion of the house!
