Snails have some of the best tasting meat in the entire world.

BTW, those big European snails are all over the place here.  I could go out right now and get you a plate full out of my yard.

My mom and dad used to raise escargot years ago, quite a lucrative business.

I've heard they are very rubbery and take quite some time to chew. If not for that, I would try them sometime.
Link Posted: 11/18/2008 8:04:44 PM EDT
They are pretty good, but it pretty much tastes like a glorified clam.  Ill take a bucket of clams.

It's all in the cooking, they can be a bit tempermental when it comes to that.
Fresh is the best way to enjoy them, but I have a feeling most resteraunts probably get them frozen.

I am cursed with an allergy to mollusks..  Crustaceans are good to go with me though.  This developed over my teenage years and by the time puberty was done a raw oyster would make me so sick and swollen i would have to go to the ER.  a couple years ago, not realizing that conch was a mollusk I had some fritters in the Bahamas.  They are delicious BTW but I was deathly sick for two days with mild swelling of my face and lips.

You have to appreciate how bad it sucks to not be able to dine on mussles in marinara or new England style clam chowder or anything like that.

I don't recall seeing them in grocery stores around here. So I'll dig around on the net to see what I can come up with. I'm hooked. I'm gonna have to try snails.

Yep, I LOVE Oysters any way they are prepared. Baked, broiled, stewed, steamed, fried, and of course, raw on the shells with hot sauce......

Who else likes snails?... ME !!

I love snails. I also like clams, mussels and pretty much any kind of dead shit that sinks to the bottom.

P.S....I also like pie. Scaley stinky fish pie. Mmmmm...

I remember a counselor at St. Theresa's Summer Camp in Soldotna, Alaska –– Dave Stockhausen was his name –– who would walk out to the lake and grab snails and leaches, cook them up and eat them with his granola in the morning.

He later became a Catholic priest.

We called him Caesar.

Hey, it was 7th grade. What can I say?

Many mainstream grocery stores have them in cans which is how a lot of them arrive in restaurants. You can also buy the shells and stuff them yourself. There are special pans and tongs and forks just for the little wonderful tasting creatures. Just don't bite one in half and look at the inside..

I consider them one of the finer things in life up there with "good" caviar, good scotch and a good cigar...

I love them, pretty tasty.

Escargot is the shit!!

On my last cruise I had 6 orders of Escargot appetizers instead of a dinner entree at one meal.

After I made this thread, I kept thinking about how awesome it would be to go to a restaurant and only buy escargot appetizers.
