Last Christmas my family was out of town, so I signed up for two back to back coverage shifts at the fire department. Still sat around eating baked goods and playing video games.

I'm supposed to be going to do Christmas with my wife and her family out-of-town this weekend. Instead, I'm working a 0200-1200 shift Sunday as a reserve deputy. This weekend is our "takeover," where the reserve unit runs all the patrols, jail, and dispatch––it's one of two mandatory events for us.

ETA: Does it make me feel good? Not necessarily––I'm a bit disappointed I won't get to spend the time with my wife. But I love being LEO, and I've always said I'd do this job even if I wasn't paid.

I am a rural emt and firefighter and I volunteer quite a bit and at the most interesting times.

I am, Meals on wheels will be contacting me when non of their drivers can get out in the snow, and My Subaru buddies and I will go deliver food for the old folks.

Skip the homeless shelters.

Visit a retirement home instead. Those folks will really appreciate it. Listen to some awesome stories. You'll probably learn something too.

There are a lot of lonely people at the retirement homes. It's very sad. Those folks have a lot of great info to share.

I will be working all Christmas Eve to try to make sure everyone gets what they ordered for Christmas.

Over 2,500 orders just this week and that is for one account out of 9.

The Montana Veterans home is in Columbia Falls, I'm sure they would welcome you.

i would say that is more noble than giving out food to people who are for the most part leeches.

Salvation army always needs help. Totally worthwhile org. Street level help. If you have lots of time, do lots of good!

i would say that is more noble than giving out food to people who are for the most part leeches.

It should....I'd do the same if I were single. It has happened here. Admit it, it's better if the firemen sit idle. Otherwise, somebody is having a very bad day. I myself would rather be bored than work a code on Christmas day, or put out a house fire with the loss of all the kid's presents on Christmas day, and I've done both.
