Having just taken a new job recently I have zero time off. My family has not yet moved down here and my wife wanted to visit her parents, anyway (traditional that we spend either Christmas or Thanksgiving out there as my parents lived in town).
So I stayed here. Actually, I drove to Land Between the Lakes and took my ruck and went 10.5 miles. My hip is bloody well killing me, I want to go to sleep and my Thanksgiving dinner is in process (brined turkey breast chops, baked and stuffed sweet potatoes, salad). To all those who are OCONUS doing difficult, dangerous work I salute your dedication and hope that you can have at least a little happiness in your Thanksgiving (even if the TCN's at the chow hall make diorama's that have no relation to the day at all). |

Fortunately I'm with my family.
I have a coworker who lives in our employee housing. Everyone has gone home but him(He's from Texas). When I asked what he was going to do, he said chill at the housing and eat chicken salad. So I have him coming over to eat with my family. |

Wife and I had our first Thanksgiving, us and the dogs.
We realized the food isn't all that important. |

My stepfather and myself went hunting for waterfowl in the morning but I'm just sitting at home now. I thought my younger(teen) brother was going to go hunting with us as well but he didn't want to go.

While hiking I found a small CSA graveyard. http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc151/Jame_Retief/20121122_090437.jpg http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc151/Jame_Retief/20121122_090522.jpg One of four graves http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc151/Jame_Retief/20121122_090452.jpg About halfway through the hike. http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc151/Jame_Retief/20121122_091827.jpg Thanksgiving lunch: http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc151/Jame_Retief/20121122_110152.jpg I found an old Civil War graveyard like that riding my bicycle on one of the back roads on Hilton Head island, it was back by the airport. It was pretty much unkempt and I doubt if too many people even knew it was there. |

This is the first Thanksgiving I've had without family. A different feeling, but it's not all that bad, considering that I really don't like all the guests at times.
Here I am on ARFCOM. |
|
All alone, wife is at work 4 hours away and just got back from hospital where mom is in critical care for a fall. I've been there for 4 days and needed a break. Will head back tomorrow.

about 950 miles away. Cooked my own mini meal today. I hate being away right now but it is what it is.
|
|
I was supposed to be working.
Wife and kids went to her sisters for Dinner. I came home sick with the flu. Had McDonalds for dinner by myself. |
|
I am in NC and the family lives in KY. I will get a chance to visit for Christmas though.

|
Family is many states away and my wife has been at work all day. Pizza for lunch and venison roast for dinner. Wife and I are doing Thanksgiving on Sunday.

You know, Im missing my first Thanksgiving from my family this year, up in Americas hat for work for a while, but it aint nothin compared to these guys. Big thanks to them and everyone in the same situation as they are. |
|
My wife is up in Pennsylvania with some members of her family. I stayed home to a)hunt today b) so we wouldn't have to board the dogs, and c)I can't take off tomorrow

worked 16 hour shift last night, slept 5 hours this afternoon and back at work. Saw all the fam for about 10 minutes on my way out the door. It sucks but I got it better than a lot of others so I'm thankful.

|
I'm already on Friday, so I'm about 9000 miles away from home.
I haven't been home for 5 Christmas if you count this one, but this is only the 2nd Thanksgiving away, and for me it is worse than missing Christman |
|
Daughter and I went and had Thanksgiving with some friends, brother is in Germany, mother is in Texas, rest of family is in Florida. Sure as hell wasn't going to spend it around my ex...

Hav'nt had a holiday back in Arizona with my family since 2007. The nature of being a discount airline pilot guy.
My hats off to they guys and gals who serve and sacrifice for us. I still miss it. |
|
I'm about 5k miles away from both my parents/siblings and my fiance. All alone, I Skyped with everyone and ate Kraft macaroni and cheese that I got in a care package earlier on in the day. It was a strange experience and I'm really missing the turkey.

mine is fickle and cheap, havent had them visit since the early 1990's. Have to travel to them if I want to see 'em. I don't want to see them.
Used to log in to facebook and they were there since i dumped it I don't feel anymore left out now than I did when i had it. |

First year without my grandparents to cook for and take care of. I need more booze

Missed anniversary, wife's B-Day, son #1 B-day, and Turkey day, will be home in 11 days though so all is good.

Had dinner with my coworkers. Will have dinner with the wife when I get home next week.

I'm OCONUS right now, but my unit is almost completely shut down. The most dangerous part of my job is escorting the problem children to their appointments and dealing with the drivers here that have never seen fog.
And I found out that Army cooks and I have radically different ideas about the meaning of the phrase 'Plenty of leftovers'. They freaked when I showed up to Thanksgiving dinner with 4 butterbowl sized containers for turkey and stuffing to take home. |

I wish I could get far from mine Yes, something like that. When Mom passed on last year, that was rather my last link to family in this area. The only other link in Texas is a brother and his ex's scare the heck out of me, so I'd rather not be anywhere near there. So here I am. _____________________________________________________________________ ("Remember: no matter where you go, there you are."––Pig Killer, (w,stte), "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome") |

Yep, but its the last holiday season I miss. A few more months I'm home and soon after that I'm a Mr. again.

Happy Thanksgiving from Afghanistan! Indeed! I don't really complain about my situation; it is certainly better than my other brother's. He was suppose to be home with his family but instead, he's stuck at the far end of the Persian Gulf till Saturday. I can't imagine what I would be doing there if the situations were reversed. But I am not complaining...........just answering the question. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ("Wish you were here and I was there."––Grant over the wireless, (w,stte), "Fantastic Voyage") |
