ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Having survived what must have been a harrowing Atlantic crossing, the 98 Gambians brought by Lord Ligonier into the narrow harbor at this small colonial capital in 1767 were sold into slavery.

One of those slaves, Kunta Kinte, is memorialized at Annapolis' City Dock and in Alex Haley's book and television series "Roots." Now Kinte's story is drawing an international group to Annapolis for a dramatic event meant to shock people into talking and thinking about the history of traffic in human beings.

A group of African and European Christians will evoke the slave trade in 10 U.S. cities this fall, starting in Annapolis. White marchers will wear chains on their hands and yokes on their necks while being escorted by black people, and everyone will wear T-shirts with a message of apology.

The Lifeline Expedition is an effort to bring "reconciliation" and "healing" in Africa, Europe and North America through symbols of penitence, organizers said.

"I believe that it helps, or potentially it helps, white people to think in a different way," said David Pott, who started the London-based organization to "reverse the damage" of the slave trade. It has held similar demonstrations in European cities linked to the 18th and 19th-century industry.

"We're not divisive in saying, 'Here's black, here's white,'" he said. "We're saying, 'We are brothers and sisters in our common humanity.'"

But in Annapolis, some people are uneasy about remembering a link to slavery and the march plans have attracted attention from a neo-Nazi group.

The City Council voted 7-2 to waive the estimated cost of $2,000 for police services and roadblocks for the walk from the water's edge through the historic city to a statue of Thurgood Marshall, the first black U.S. Supreme Court justice.

But Mayor Ellen O. Moyer said she opposed the waiver because it was too early to know how large the Sept. 29 event will be and how much it will cost the city. Moyer, who is white, also disagrees with Lifeline Expedition's tactics, although she said she supports any group's right to demonstrate.

"I think it's a private matter," Moyer said. "The way that we all choose to reconcile issues that deal with man's inhumanity to man is private." Some people choose "good works, unheralded" to express concern for injustices of the past, she noted, and the city has had local groups that offered a dialogue on race relations.

The Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation is the local sponsor for the walk, working to raise $75,000 with organizers in Europe to pay for travel and event costs for between 14 and 20 demonstrators.

Foundation President Leonard Blackshear, who is black, said he shares a mission with Lifeline Expedition.

"Racism is a cancer eating away at the American soul," he said. "This activity is simply one type of chemotherapy that we are looking to apply to the cancer because we believe the patient can and wants to be healed."

Blackshear is looking for local volunteers to take part in the event and said local churches have signed on to help.

Moyer said the city had received inquiries from potential counter-protesters and she's apprehensive about keeping the event positive.

Pott acknowledges that staging such a demonstration in a U.S. city may bring a harsh reaction and said he is praying that things go smoothly.

The neo-Nazi National Alliance, based in Hillsboro, W.Va., wants Annapolis residents to protest the march. The group left 1,500 fliers last weekend at homes all over city, urging people to "Say No to White Guilt" and object to the city's waiver of expenses.

Rather than promoting healing, the event takes slavery and "rubs it in the faces of white people and says they're guilty of something," said Shaun Walker of the National Alliance. He said the group has not decided whether to attend the demonstration.

Lifeline Expedition also plans to walk through the streets of Baltimore; Boston; Charleston, S.C.; New York; Richmond, Va., and several other cities.

Carol Palmer volunteered to walk in chains in Richmond, where she is helping to coordinate the U.S. tour.

"A huge part of the tragedy of what happened years ago is that it was supported by Christians," said Palmer, who works for a missionary organization called Youth With A Mission. "As Christians, we're asking for forgiveness because we were in the wrong."

Having been through college and acquired two liberal arts degrees, in retrospect, I could have saved myself a lot of time, money and trouble by just learning these two precepts before I went in:

1) Capitalism is the root of ALL the world's evils.

2) The white man is the Devil.

They were the underpinnings for my education, and ever since, I've spent my life in the real world, unlearning them.

it's pretty pretentious that these people are foriegners. How would those european christians like it if we came to their town and marched around like prisoners from Nazi concentration camps to highlight their ancestor's horrofic moral failings in either being involved with, or surrendering to, the Nazis? And how exactly do these african christians think the slaves got here? It's not like the plantation owners were sailing to Africa to catch them, other africans were up to their eyeballs in the slave trade.

WTF no one in my immediate family lived here before the 20th century anyway, we were busy being oppressed by ~~Guinness~~ the British.

My ancestors owned some slaves. I'm not going to apologize to anyone for it. I never owned a slave, nor did anyone I have ever met. In fact, there is not a single living person who was an American slave, or an American slave owner. I would be shocked it there was anybody alive that had a parent who was a slave, or a slave owner. Within a few years there won't even be anyone alive that ever met a slave or slave owner. The idea that we would give reparations to black people because of slavery is ridiculous. They are born in America with the same opportunity as anyone else. They are free to leave this country at any time. The rest should be up to them.

The Roman's are documented to have had slaves. One theory says that the Egyptians used slaves to build the pyramids. I have read that Africans still have slaves(in Africa). There are slaves in Asian countries. This country officially disapproves of Slavery. Why are they protesting over here when we officially did away with Slavery about 150 years ago?

Despite the appeal of such a woman, I'll have to caution you about making that kind of statement.

There is slavery going on today. Yes, some of it here in the USA. They call it "Human Trafficking" and is a form of underground slavery where women (and sometimes children) are kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. It's devestatingly common for women from ex-soviet countries to be sucked into this slavery, but it also happens to vulnerable women in just about any country. I'd explain more, but I'll get depressed if I go farther into it. Please read up on it.

As for these numbskulls who go around wearing chains in mock similitude of slavery, well...whatever floats their boat....

That's freaking hilarious.

However, I don't think those white folks have gotten enough of their self-absorbed morally superior guilt out of their system - and I suggest they come over to my house, where they can really identify with the slaves' suffering by cutting my lawn, finishing my basement, and doing some body work on my mustang.

I think that would be better "penitence" that holding up traffic in an attention-whoring show.

Quite frankly - if they wanted to do something meaningful, they could go into economically depressed inner cities and help build houses or something. I guess inconveniencing people and getting lots of attention is somehow more "penitent" that actually helping "Habitat for HUmanity" do something worthwhile.

African Americans and Jewish Americans used to have a fairly cordial relationship. Alot dealing with people who have suffered oppression and come through it to make it on their own in America. That changed somewhere around the time JJ made himself supreme leader and started to openly and blatently insult the Jewish folks who in alot of cases had been MLK's benefactors. See, MLK wanted equality, and everyone was pretty ok with that. JJ however wanted entitlement and to keep average black folks down as a means to his own personal power and fortune so he could be viewed as a savior. Much like other despots of the past, he needed someone to blame when his constituency was on the verge of seeing through his charade. He in hitleresque fashion of course chose the Jews. This of course didn't play so well with those Jews who had written checks supporting his cause so he then resorted to trying to extort the rest of corporate America. Well, most here know the rest of this long drama. Now, Reverend Al, hey, anyone who can wear that hairstyle in public is ok. He actually did once have a real paying job for a little while, and he was just turned by JJ's example.

You know what? Even though one of my maternal ancestors (a Frenchie who came here in the early 1700's) did own slaves, I didn't. My parents didn't. Their parents didn't. THEIR parents didn't. And anyway, I didn't, and that's the ONLY thing that matters. Even if Grampa owned a thousand slaves, the thing is, I don't, and I have never taken part in the slave trade.

Which is why I don't need to apologize. Which is why I don't need to pay reparations.

As a side note, while I do believe the Civil War was mainly about the states' rights disagreement, at least a little bit of it was fought about slavery.

Well Sarge, last I checked it was $75 for the licence which can be obtained from the County Court House. The fee seems reasonable enough although mine was for one without the big hooters option. AFAIK, it's a flat rate even if you get one loaded with options. But you probably realize it's the "hidden fees" that make it such a large investment!

Good thinking. Let's dredge up an old, painful, divisive issue that no longer directly affects any living person. That will do a lot of good. Dwelling on the past accomplishes nothing. These dumbasses need to stay in Europe where they belong.
