Most mercenary work today takes place under the guise of Private Military Corporations (PMCs).  The most respected and well-known of all the PMCs is probably Sandline International (www.sandline.com).  Sandline was instrumental in restoring order and democracy to Sierra Leone back in 1998.  In addition, the firm has also undertaken at least 5 more internationally publicized assignments since 1993.

Two other PMCs you might want to check out are Military Professional Resources Incorporated (www.mpri.com) and DynCorp (www.dyncorp.com).  Both MPRI and DynCorp have been hired by the US Government to conduct anti-narcotics operations in Colombia.  In fact, DynCorp came under intense scrutiny by Congress earlier this year for firing down upon a FARC guerilla position in the Colombian jungle during an attempt to recover crewmen from a downed helicopter.

Wow, the responses to this thread weren't anything like I expected.  I thought the first reply would say something like, "Rosie O'Donut going after a speck of food."  Next, I expected the second reply to be something like, "The International Association of Mall Ninjas.  They're the best mercenary group in the world."  A thread about mercenaries has been open for hours, and no Rosie or Mall Ninja jokes?  Are the regulars out doing something somewhere?z

I have to agree with Winston_Wolf that your's is a great first post.
But, you should have given more information on Dyncorp. When you use the link to the Dyncorp website it appears that they are just another U.S. Government contractor like, say Boeing. But they are indeed a P.M.C.

This is a well written article about Dyncorphttp://www.corpwatch.org/issues/military/featured/2001/dyncorp.html
This is a must read for whomever is interested.

Also check out this article from the Christian Science Monitor about P.M.C.s--http://csmonitor.com/durable/1998/10/13/p19s1.htm
