So I'm thinking of making a bulk purchase of high-ish BC bullets for my 308/30-06 precision guns - getting into the match game, and it sounds like I'm going to have some trips in the future with my wife's family that will involve some longer range hunting. I could either buy a bunch of target-grade bullets with relatively poor terminal performance (e.g.: 190 Nosler CC, 175 SMK, etc.), buy fewer bullets with not-so-high BCs, but that would also have useful terminal performance (e.g.: Nosler 190 Accubond, 180 Berger VLD Hybrids, etc), or buy a mix, and work up dope for both (which would be kind of a pain in the ass). What would Arfcom do?

ETA: Title adjusted. I'm not asking which bullet to buy, but whether it seems more worth it to consolidate on one load, or to keep multiple loads for different applications. I obviously do my own load development.

You have 308/3006 precision guns but don't know bullets to buy?

eta: I'm not trying to be mean. it just seems odd.

I'd find out which bullets my rifles liked best and buy those.

But I'm funny that way.

The easy answer is to ask your rifle which bullet it prefers. The only way to accomplish this is through load development with lots of shooting. No bullet is magic.

155 Lapua Scenars are working great for me.

I read the title and thought the same thing.

No, I have tested a number of different bullets in them, and both give good results with most of what I feed them. Unsurprisingly, best accuracy and BC come from bullets designed specifically for that.

The question is whether it seems worth it to develop and keep multiple loads, some that have crappy terminal performance, and some that have good terminal performance, or if people find it more worth it to stock a bullet that can be used directly for hunting/terminal performance applications so it's always consistent. Just seeing what GD recommends. It will no doubt be good advice, amirite?

I would develop multiple loads.

At the very least 1 hunting load with a hunting bullet and 1 match bullet.

I never stop developing so I keep trying different things. In 30 caliber I have bullets from 115 grain to 175 and everything in between. I don't shoot the heavies in a 308....yet.

Looks like the author is suggesting what I did in the OP - match bullets don't give reliable terminal performance.

I currently have about a dozen different .308 cal bullets stocked up, mainly for different loads for our 300 rums....that's how you make one gun versatile...mine vary in .308 from 125 Barnes solids all the way up to Berger 230 hybred....

Here's just some of them...

125 Solid to 230 Hybred..

I never put all of my eggs in one basket, it's self limiting.  Simplicity is having DOPE for a bunch of shit we might encounter.

Get a few of everything and fiddle with them, seeing what the weapon likes.  This way, if something is out of stock down the road, you aren't left holding a wet bag.

This.  It is both long AND tedious AND will require LOTS of range time!

VLDs and good terminal performance aren't really a thing.

Just pick whatever shoots the best from your rifle. We tend to overthink this kind of stuff.
