LMS: 1996 with Bruce Willis.

FOF: 1964 with Clint Eastwood.

Both are remakes of a Japanese film, which is based on a novel from 1927.

Which was better and why?

Fistful, because it's part of a triology and Clint's character is a lot better than Bruces.  That being said, LMS is one of my favorite films and I have the DVD in my collection, as well as FOD
