My buddies and I have often had this discussion. For me it is moot, because I can't own an MP5 in MN. Besides, a Thompson is my holy grail. That being said, however, under other circumstances, I would probably convince myself to get the MP5, and for only one reason: 9mm is cheap, and everywhere. You're going to burn a lot of ammo, so you might as well get whatever will cost less.
Or get the Tommy gun because they kick ass! It's really up to you. |

The Thompson shoots a caliber that starts with '4', therefore the Thompson is the correct choice.

I have a Thompson, but if I were to get another MG it would have to be an M16 or HK MP5. Ammo is cheaper, ergonomics are better and you can trick them out. I have the Thompson for historical reasons
, and while I love it, it gets boring after 300 rounds. Now, the BAR...that's a hammer and I never get bored with it. I do however take issue with expensive 30.06!

M1A1 Thompson, otherwise, I'd get the MP5. I don't like the aesthetics of the 1927/8 models that can use the drums and have the vertical foregrips. I like the Saving Private Ryan version. Plus I could turn an M1A1 into a pulse rifle from Aliens!

I've shot both. The Thompson is AWESOME to shoot. The MP5 that I shoot is 10mm, and it's like you say, very cool. The 9mm I'm sure is just as cool, and I would recommend the MP5 over the Thomspon.

I have a 1928 thompson, Cutts compensated. lotsa fun to rock and roll through a 50 round drum, even if it is 10 bucks in ammo sent down range in a few seconds. The looks I get at the range are simply priceless

From my little expirence, (renting the two) the mp5 to me seemed like I could control it better. It fit me like a glove. My conclusion came from my shot groups on full.

MP-5 is more controllable in that it is nimble (better handling).
Thompson is tons of fun but I hate the controls (read: not the trigger) Its also (or at least seems to be) considerably heavier to be packing around. I'd have to go with MP-5 on this one. |

I think an MP5 wins over a Thompson. and I own a transferable M1 Thompson SMG.
The Thompson has a lot of character and good looks, plus it is a piece of history....and a joy to shoot. The downside is that it is heavy, not that compact or bad ergonomics and being .45 is not cheap to shoot. The MP5 on the other hand Looks great, and shoots great. And being a modern modular weapon there are number of optics and upgrades for the MP5. What makes the MP5 more desirable to me, is the fact that a MP5 sear gun can be used in a number of HK "host" guns. .308 G3, 51, G3K HK21 .223 33, 33K, 53, 23E 9mm MP5, MP5K/SP89, MP5SD .40 MP5, Vector Clone 10mm MP5 Vector Clone 7.62X39 52K SW Clone 45 ACP MP5 SW Clone/Bobcat SP89 clone .22lr Lulsa Host Granted the host guns are not cheap, and there is the added cost of SBR taxes if you want a MP5 look. But the cost of one sear, which is high allows one to shoot 8 different calibers and a number of different weapons. Sub-machine gun to Belt fed I have thought about selling the Thompson for an MP5, but I like the Thompson too much to get rid of it. So in true ARF.com fashion I will try and find a way to buy both.

If I could have only one street broom for use in a dark alley I would go with the Tommy Gun, those who say it's not controllable just don't know how to handle an open bolt machinegun. Look at the statistics, it's a 17lb shoulder fired weapon shooting a 45 handgun round, just how much recoil can it have, it's just poor shooting technique.
Now I I had to carry a subgun very far the MP5 is much lighter. If you buy a sear or registered trigger group, you are not limited to 9mm, it will fit anything from the SP89 pistol host to the HK21 beltfed, and will work in all the various caliber clone guns. As for cost I think you could get into an Auto Ord tommy gun easily in HKMP5 price range. But if you buy a HK sear can you really afford 10 more host HK style weapons to put it in. Even if a Tommy Gun costs more it might be cheaper because it will only ever be a tommy gun never a belt fed also. |

I don't have a lot of Thompson time but I'm about 99% certain you are wrong. I can pistol fire a MP5 without any issue. I can't even hold a Thompson that way. Also a MP5 is closed bolt where a Thompson is open so you will have an issue of slam fire. Now the Thompson is quite a bit heavier, which is what makes it so controllable, so you can manage it nicely and the slam fire doesn't create an issue like it does with say a Mac 10. |

Don't underestimate the weight of a Tommygun. My M1 was heavy without the drum. No recoil to speak of but HEAVY!

Part of the reason a thompson does not recoil is that it fires from an open bolt. The bolt is slamming forward as each round goes off, counteracting the force generated by the discharging round.
The thompson is not as accurate as an mp5. Nor can it be controled as well as an mp5. |
