how old ? might be cheaper to get a decent PC and Minecraft ... my 7 yr old loves MC more now and saves so much money and no more stepping on lego mines in the morning before coffee.

Amazon has knockoff lego "building blocks" that look, feel, and fit just like lego, are fully compatible with real lego also.
Less than half the cost of real deal Lego Amazon Link Girlfriends kids love these, because you can get a few thousand for them to build whatever they want for less than a single Lego set with 500-700 pieces. |

There is no LEGO equivalent. They are superior. Period. Been playing with them since I first got an original set at Christmas that a relative brought back from Denmark 40+ years ago.
My kids have had all the knock off brands over the years, bought by well meaning relatives, and they all suck. They ARE expensive, but " buy once, cry once " and all that... I still keep buckets full of Legos here at the house for anytime we have kids over... And my adult children still get a LEGO kit every Christmas. |

speaking of lego, I just went to the post office and on top of the waste box was a lego magazine ad.
Thumbing through it they have lego star wars figures with cool looking weapons. Cops and Robbers, mil guys, really cool looking stuff. Someone 45 yrs my jr would be all over these. |

I don't know about any of the like brands, but so many of the sets at stores are theme or character based with a lot of specialty pieces. Get them one of these and let the imagination work.

Cobi bricks are the closest I have found to Lego quality.
My daughter loves it when I get out the tiger tank and help her lego police catch the bad guys.
