I've been searching for it since I'm looking at buying a new car within a month or two.  Trying to get an idea how much I can save.

Thanks hive.

I just did a search of "ask", and "salesman", and "car" and couldn't find it.   Crap.

I'm looking at a 2011.  How much leeway from the sticker price do I have?  The sticker says around 30K.  The internet says that particular car has an internet price of 28.9K.  Can I offer 26K out the door and have a prayer of getting it?

No.  Unless there is a big rebate.

You are offering around 23k for the car.  There is about 10% markup on new cars.  What are you trying to buy?

Hyundai Genesis Coupe.  The 3.8 v6 with all the bells and whistles.

ETA:  So I guess if I asked for it 28K out the door?

"Fighting Chance"

Well worth the $39.95 (for pricing information for one car)

According to the author, the key is that you don't make offers, you get bids from the dealerships.

You never know if a particular dealership is more motivated than the others to make a sale - they may be close to a dealership sales goal which means more $$$ for them (even if they lose money on an individual car), someone's job is on the line if they don't make quota, etc.

I used his method earlier this year to buy a new car - I obtained multiple bids from dealers in my area (all contact was by e-mail or phone); I never even met the salesman at the winning dealership until we went to close the deal.  He not only had the best price (about $1000 less than the highest bid), but he also threw in extras

Best of all, my blood pressure and sanity remained intact by not having to go from dealer to dealer

The best time to start the process is the last week of the month (you have to allow time for e-mails to go back and forth, etc.)

I'm planning to buy near the end of the month.  I think I'll have more dealing room.  I wanted to be prepared so I came to the hive.
