and what were you doing??.......

November 22, 1963........

January 28, 1986..........

September 11, 2001.......

I'll start...

11/22/63

I was 2-1/2 so I figure I was home annoying my mother

1/28/86

Only 12 days into my new job in Toledo, OH was going through orientation when someone came running down the hallway telling us the space shuttle exploded.  Seems we spent the rest of the day watching the replays on a TV in one of the conference rooms.

9/11/01

At work..my wife called to tell me about the first plane..I was on the phone with her when the second one hit, I'll never forget her scream.

Ask me what I had for lunch yesterday and I couldn't tell ya'.

where was I...

11/22/63
I didn't exist. My parents were in their mid teens and hadn't met yet.

1/28/86
I was in the 4th grade I think, at Ramstein AFB in Germany, in one of my classes, when they turned on the TV and showed the footage of the Challenger.  I cried..

9/11/01
Driving to work at about 8:40 CST, almost an hour after it happened, had the radio on, but they were talking about some fire behind the Whitehouse, and some plane crash, didn't get what they were talking about in my 10 minute drive to work.  Got into work, and they were getting a TV going, and everyone was trying to hit the news websites.  One guy on my row had a TV receiver card in his machine, and tuned in a news channel, and at about 9:30 or 10, I saw the footage of the second plane hitting the second tower.  Saw that repeated all day... went to bed thinking I was watching a bad movie, woke up the next day to learn it wasn't a bad movie....

11-23-63 - Still about 4 1/2 years until birth.

01-28-86 - Teaching a group of 1st graders how to read, we were watching the shuttle liftoff and then...

09-11-01 - Getting ready for work, my wife got me out of the shower and I spent the entire morning with that non-rinsed feeling. It was the least of my worries. I still can remember the awful feeling when seeing the row of ambulances all lined up with the cots out and doors left open.

-wasn't born

-eating breakfast before going to school in 6th grade, heard the news on NPR.

-Working up in Prudhoe Bay,  was getting up for coffee in the rec room at 9:15 EST and overheard the flustered and panicked voices of the newscasters, and knew something big happened.  Went to one of the TV's to see the first tower smoking.  Completely dumbfounded, couldn't believe what was happening.  Kept saying "F*ck me!" over and over as the second plane impacted.  Watched the first tower come down, and I couldn't handle it.  Went to work, heard the second tower had collapsed and the Pentagon had been crashed into, and a car bomb outside the State Department.  They sent us back to camp early.

1/28/86...at work in Downtown Manhattan, my Mom called from Satellite Beach FL saying she just saw it happen...

9/11/01...At work in Charlotte, on the phone with a Buddy in the second tower...Yes he made it out.

1/28/86 sitting in Mr. Grace's eighth grade math class, saw it on TV

9/11/01 came into a hotel in Bad Karlshafen, Germany, where the owner's son spoke enough English to tell my brother and I that a plane with a bomb had hit New York and the White House.  We spent the whole evening of 9/11 watching German language TV and trying to make out what had happened from the pictures and the bits and pieces of German that I knew.  All we could see of New York was a big cloud of dust and smoke over Manhattan.  It wasn't until the next morning when we got an English language newspaper that we found out the towers had completely collapsed.

(1) ... at five I was playing with kids outside. I clearly remember mom and the neighbor ladies that gathered for coffee (a ritual back then when womenz didn't work) crying. Never saw mom cry. Wow.

(2) ... at work and I'm in Aerospace. We all split and went to a local bar to watch it on TV. The bar was full of my co-workers and no one was drinking.

(3) ... getting ready for work. I've not been the same since. Seriously.

1963- Not Born yet

1986 - Sitting in Algebra class in high school.  Above my desk was a model of the space shuttle hanging from the ceiling.  When they announced it my teacher gasped as her husband was a main engineer on the shuttle's landing gear.  As I listened to the announcment I just stared at the model.

Sep 11 - I was asleep when my dad called and told me the first one hit.  I turned on the TV just in time to see the second one hit live on Fox News.

'63 my mother was 5 years old.  My grandfather told me that he was at Atlanta International when Kennedy was shot and a cheer went through the terminal.  Apparently he wasn't as popular as the press says he was.

'86 I was in 1st grade and we were watching it on TV.  I still remember it blowing apart.  The thing that pissed me off then and still does now is that the only thing you heard was how that poor teacher had died (whatever her name was) as if the real astronauts didn't matter.

'01 just got up at about 10 or so and flipped the TV to TBS.  I saw the footage and thought it was one of those cheesy made-for-TV movies.  As I watched I started to think it was a little too real to be grade B computer graphics so I switched to CNN.  The exact same footage was rolling.  It sank in then.

Sitting in 8th Grade Science class.  My science teacher was one of the finalists for the 1st civilian to go up.  She roomed with Christa McAullife while they were going through all of the training that they had.  I will never forget the sound of her scream when the Challenger exploded.

September 11, 2001
Just got off from work.  Stopped to get groceries and heard on the radio that a plane had flown into the WTC.  Thought to myself, "Just someone out taking flying lessons in a Cessna"  Then got home and turned on the TV and was the 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower.  I knew then that something was going on.

My parents were in the 9th grade........

January 28, 1986..........

Sitting in my highschool principals office getting a butt chewing for arguing with my shop teacher. (long story but since the shop teacher was in the wrong and threatend me w/ a 2x2 I spent the rest of the year loafing in the gym during that class and got an A for the year)

September 11, 2001.......

Walking thru 'security' at NewPort News Airport, (VA) when a security guard saw my shirt (Internation Assoc. of Fire Fighters) emblem and told me. Sat in the airport for 5 min on phone w/ the station at work since they did not have a tv in the terminal. Decided we weren't flying and left. As we were leaving they announced that all flights were "cancelled due to a national emergency"

Yes I cried, when I heard Dan Rather on the radio say the 1st tower had collapsed. I knew that a lot of Firefighters were dead and dieing. That struck me hard seeing as what I do for a living.

'63: Not born yet.  My mom said she was watching her soap operas when a news bulletin cut in.

'86:  I walked into my 3rd grade class, and another kid asked me if I'd heard.

'01:  A coworker and I had gone to our systems engineer's office for a meeting, and he happened to have his TV on the news.  He told us that a plane had just hit the WTC.  Terrorism crossed my mind, but I was guessing it was probably an accident.

We saw the second plane hit live on TV and realized it was terrorists.  We still didn't realize that these were full-sized passenger jets and not little private planes.  When they announced an explosion at the Pentagon, it felt like the whole world was crashing down around us.  When we saw the first tower had collapsed, I realized this was on the order of Pearl Harbor and we were going to war.

Hmmm...lets see

1963- I wasn't born until 78. Dad would have been in his junior year at Princeton so I was a drunk sperm, mom was riding on a school bus I think when it happened.

1986- I was sitting in a third grade classroom watching it. The teacher was one of the candidates (not a finalist though) for Christa McAuliffe's spot. Complete silence followed by sobs.

9/11/01- Walked into law school lobby before 10am class. Hadn't heard about it yet. Saw deans, professors, students watching TVs in lobby that aren't normally there...thought the President was assasinated or something. Couldn't believe what I saw...never seen so many awe-struck people in my life.

63- N/A

86- at lunch break during Jr. High, I remember 'someone' telling me about. Got home that afternoon and watched the replay on TV.

9/11- Sleeping in, as usual (I work nights) Heard the phone ring 4 or 5 times. Figgered it was the damn telemarketers getting an early start. Next time it rang I hear my buddies voice on the machine telling me to GET MY ASS OUT OF BED AND TURN ON THE TV, THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END!! (his words)
half asleep/half hungover I sat there and watched as the second plane hit. and I remember thinking, OK, this is one of those REALLY sureal dreams! I wish to god it was!
Sat there watching the reports until I had to go to work. By that time all the locals were in a SERIOUS PANIC!!! There were lines at EVERY Supermarket and gas station. Some stations had cars backed out into the street 10-12 deep waiting to get gas.
But those first words of his "The worlds coming to an end" haunted me for quite some time.

1) N/A
2) It was a snow day and school was out. This was'nt great because my brother and myself got an extra day of manual labor on the farm. We recently had electric run to the barn where we were serving out our time in the cold. Luckly we had an old radio to listen to, when the news report came on in the middle of a song we knew something was up.
3) Had come home from work, was playing with my son and talking to my wife when my mother in law called. We turned on the TV in time to see the second plane hit. I remember wishing I had more ammo and food on hand.
4) Another time I'll never forget was a morning in the early 90's. The alarm was set to go off a 5:50 every morning, that also happened to be the time when this radio station liked to put on the news. I remember setting on the edge of the bed when they said Iraq had invaded some small mid eastern country I had never heard of, and thinking to myself, "What the hell diffrence does this make". Little did I know is that in a matter of days my brother would be halfway around the world facing an uncertain future, and myself living with a dreadful fear for almost the next year. [uzi]
