So I'm working in Detroit 3 days every two weeks, and I need some places to go.  I also need to know where not to go, because I like to just randomly drive around.

A few weeks ago I was on 8 mile road and Telegraph and drove west from there to the highway.

I usually stay at the airport or in Livonia, stayed in Ann Arbor a time or two out of boredom.

I don't however, want to wander into a fucking war zone by accident, especially since I don't travel with firepower.

Detroit area residents, school me please.

Downtown area is fine, greektown, casinos, coney island.  If it looks like Baghdad, you went to far.

This, please note that Baghdad starts literally immediately after the casinos/downtown area. Like less than a few 100 feet. Its hilarious, sad, and upsetting all at the same time.

Immediate downtown and Greektown are OK.   Stay North of 8 Mile and/or West of 39.

Downtown is fine (I would stay away from the area called greektown, especially on friday/saturday nights, misguided youth have been known to try to redistribute your wealth). Midtown, which is the university/art institute area, is also pretty damn safe these days. Corktown is up an coming and has a lot of neat restaurants and bars. If it's been a while since you've been here, it's amazing how much has changed in the past few years.

North of 8 mile you should be fine.

If you make it to 8/Telegraph make sure you hit up Nikola's on Telegraph.

Also try Gold Cash Gold in D-town, supposed to be a great farm to fork restaurant.

So I'm not just talking about food, The Henry Ford museum is a great time, too.

The Henry ford has giant fucking things on display that are really big and huge, and a Wienermobile.

That's my review of the Henry Ford.

I was going to get off the highway last week near the bridge and kind of drive around to see how shitty it was.  Guess that would have been shitville, huh?

I took 94 to St Clair Shores and several times almost got off the highway to drive around and see what the city has become.

I grew up in the Downriver area (south of Detroit) in Trenton. Went to Catholic school in Wyandotte. About 15 miles south of Detroit. I've not been back in years, but on nice afternoons & evenings, the riverfront parks in Trenton and Wyandotte were nice to sit and watch the Lakes freighters go by. Someone else would have to say if they're still safe, but I think they are, from what I hear.

Just got a great business idea from this thread. Uber type thrill tour, cruising places like Detroit on a hot summer night in an MRAP, with photo ops for tourists People do ghost tour shit in lots of places, this would be like a live cops episode, adrenaline rush for white folks.

I would stay out of the neighborhoods. Awhile back, a white guy accidentally hit a kid with his truck and was nearly  beaten to death. Downtown with other people is OK.

In blackface.  You know, so you're really letting folks know how much you're trying to blend in to your second home.

Kinda like buying a pick up after moving from NYC to Houston.

Last time I went there I was the only one that spoke English. We don't call that area the New Fallujah for nothing.

When I worked at Chrysler the old training center was in Warren. We were advised not to go south of Vandyke on 8 mile. So we did.
I tell you what, that was an experience. I was happy to make it out in one piece.

Funny side note: technicians from all over the country were present for the class and the subject of urban youths and self protection came up in a pre class BS session. One after another the guys pulled their weapons and placed them on their desks. It looked like a gun show.

On another trip to the training center 696 was flooded out and I was forced to grab any hotel I could. it was 3am I was tired, frustrated and pissed off. I was only a few miles from my reserved room at a Holiday inn express.
Instead I wound up at a shit hole. My first clue was the night clerk. A very nice but frightened man named  Habeeb encased in a bullet proof class front desk.
My room was ground floor next to the parking lot. The window was broke and would not lock and the screen was cut.
Twice during the night there was gunfire in or near the lot right outside my room. Shortly after "check in" a very persistent knock at door which I ignored to no avail.
After several minuets of banging on the door and ignoring my request to "go away" I opened the door to find a very large salesman and a not so bad looking product he insisted I rent for one half hour.
I was of course armed and had to produce my weapon to discourage any further continuation of the sales pitch.
He was to say the least very angry and I spent the night in a chair out of view from the broken open window with a 1911 in my hand.
I left shangri la as soon as the sun came up and thankfully my escape route (696) had reopened.

Indian Village, Boston-Edison, Palmer Woods, Detroit Institute of Art (Wayne State University), Corktown, Belle Isle- just six safe places to visit I can name off the top of my head which are south of 8 mile.

When I was walking around in these areas (yes walking) less than a month ago I saw more white people than any other ethnic group.

I wish they would fix the roads, however.  It's really sad when the stretch of road (Jefferson Avenue I think) that passes in front of GM World Headquarters is straight out of Kosovo.

All the suburbs north of 8 mile on Woodward are nice.

First, yeah, you were in hipster studentville there. Some areas are also backfilling with young whites (causing heartache to the angry black local populace).

Second: the roads. Pure Michigan. As I pounded down the road just yesterday I marveled at the engineering of my wife's Jeep and my dodge truck that has kept the suspensions intact for 11 and 12 plus years respectively...
